XBox One Managed Users

Forgive me if this has been asked/answered elsewhere - I’ve been searching the forum for a while but I can’t seem to find an answer. I read a while back about the addition of managed users. I set them up but can’t seem to find a way to access them from the XBox One. The idea is that certain users can only see certain libraries
The PS3 and the PS4 makes it very simple. When you log in, you pick the user and you’re good to go. I can’t seem to find that option for the XBox One. Am I missing something?
I’ve read a few things about having to jump through a bunch of hoops and create new accounts but I got lost following some of the steps. It just seemed so much easier with the Playstation(s) so I figured it either wasn’t available for the XBox One yet or I was doing something wrong.
Thanks in advance

Managed users are currently not supported. As you say, some hoops need to be jumped through, but you can do it:

  • Create plex.tv users for the family members
  • Add them to your Plex Home
  • Create XB1 account for each user
  • Open Plex on the family member’s XB1 account
  • Enter the PIN in a browser signed in to that family member’s Plex account
  • Much Success

(hopefully)

Thanks for the quick reply. I’m glad to know there is a way to make it work, but I don’t want to have to switch XB1 accounts just to use Plex. Seems like it would be much easier to just pick the Plex User like the way it works on the Playstation(s). I hope there are plans to bring that feature to the XB1.
Thanks again

I actually prefer that the Plex user be tied to an Xbox user. Maybe we could get a vote setup on the forum for this feature. Although wouldn’t it be possible to cover both options? If it’s setup like managed users you could either tie a Managed User to an Xbox account (and basically just “remember” the managed user), or allow switching to a different managed Plex user within the same Xbox account.

Internally I think we’re at a 50:50 split on which approach works - so we’re trying to work out a UX that will keep everyone happy. Thanks!

Just created a new Plex.tv account for my kids. Invited it to my main account’s Home. Shared all the libraries and restricted them to Family appropriate content. They already had their own Xbox One account. Everything works great. The only frustrating thing is that now I had to add a passkey to my Xbox One account so they cant log in to me thereby giving them access to my plex account and ALL of the content.

I could see how it would be handy to create accounts for each person if you have kids or something like that. Personally, I like the option to log in to the XBox under my main user account and then pick the Plex account I want to use. The way it works with the Playstation (I don’t mean to keep bringing up the Playstation, but it is the only point of reference that I have) is once you log in with the master Plex account and enter a password, you then pick which plex account you want to use.
The current way, which Dom C explained, seems like you would have to log into a different XBox account depending on which Plex account you wanted to use. Again, this might be handy for people with kids or other family members with existing XBox accounts (I get that), but as it stands I don’t have kids and would find it annoying to have to log into the XBox with a different account each time I wanted to watch a movie, and then switch accounts to play a game under my original user name.
Just my two cents. I’m glad this sparked a conversation and that each way is being considered. Hats off to Plex for listening

I like how it works now. Then again, I have kids and I love that I can assign different viewing options based on their accounts. They don’t need to know how to switch accounts to watch the movies they are allowed to watch. They simply sign in to their xbox profile and launch plex. If they can see it, they can watch it. Works great for us.

Yup, and this conversation is also showing the split, good to know! Thanks for the input!

If the main plex account holders libraries did NOT define the only choices we have to add or remove from a managed user access to a library this would solve the problem.
Currently the managed user only has access to the main account holders defined libraries.
However if the we could ADD a NEW library to the choice of libraries for a managed user then it would solve the issue for xbox one users.

Any progress on this? I thought the goal was consistency across the clients though? Seems to be more discussion than I would expect on how to implement it on Xbox when it should just be the same surely?

Since the XB1 already has user management features, and parental controls, we don’t (necessarily) want to do the same as e.g. web or TV apps here.

It’s currently in progress, but no promises on when it will arrive, I’m afraid.
