New to XBOX is this how it suppose to work?

In brand spanking new to XBOX, just want to know if that is normal behavior.
I have two users on XBOX, me and my son (he is part of XBOX family, added as kid, if that matters).
Installed Plex, signed in via plex.tv/pin on my user. Client works great.
Switched user to my son, started Plex, I need to sign in again, ok, done that, client works.
Switched back to my user, started Plex, I have to sign in again?! Can I somehow sign in and make this default for every user on XBOX?

That’s normal

@Moussa are we going to see option to link managed users to xbox live profile? Or at least make 1 sign in across all xbox profiles.

The problem currently is that Plex is only allowed to link one plex account to one xbox live account. Once a new account is linked the old account is removed.

The possibility of linking a managed user to an xbox live profile is going to be extremely hard to do since the account only exists on your server. It’s similar to the way that you need to initially sign into the full account in order to switch to the managed account. The problem here is that if you’re logged into a different plex account it breaks the old one’s log in. This is actually the reason why the current recommendation is to create a free plex account, add it to your plex home, and then link that account to the xbox live account that needs access. For myself this has an extra benefit in that if I need to give access to that account on another app I no longer need to log into my master account and switch users, I can just log into the provisioned account and it goes straight to that user.

However, with all of that being said they are still trying to find ways to improve this area for users.

@jmckee Thank for response. Yes, I have seen the solution with free accounts but I have already managed users in place. As it seems the XBOX app is quite behind in development and taking also in count my other XBOX post I will just leave it as it is.

@jmckee Appreciate the response, but I’m not understanding how this is extremely hard to do. Doesn’t managed users work this way in the Win10 Plex app? It’s not exactly setup so that the xbox/windows login is directly connected to a managed user, but it at least allows each Xbox login to auto sign-in for a specific managed user. So if the Admin user logs into Windows and opens Plex, they see their Plex account. And if a separate user logs into the same Windows device with their own Windows login, and opens Plex, they will see their own Plex managed user account. Each user can still switch to a different managed user, but each managed user is protected with Plex PINs. And, each Windows user retains auto sign-in with a specific (and different) Plex managed user account. If the next Xbox update is a UWP app, it seems this setup would work for @“Bartlomiej Baraniec”.

@mbarylski thanks for sharing that info. I wasn’t aware of how UWP works, don’t use it, don’t share my computer with other family members. Yes, it would be perfect solution, assigning plex users to xbox profiles. Again XBOX app needs refreshing in current state is hardly useful.

That is still a completely different application with completely different restrictions. When the Xbox One app was developed it was restricted to a 1:1 connection of 1 Plex account to 1 Xbox Live account and the app is restricted from browsing for a local server on the network. This is where the main problem comes from. When the app starts up the Xbox live account has to be authorized for a plex account. Because managed users are local to the server and not a global plex account the Xbox has no way to verify a managed user account without already being connected to either the master account or the server. So not only is there not a way for the app to verify a managed user account, there also isn’t a way for plex to link an xbox live account to the local managed user account. (This is a restriction that you wouldn’t typically see on windows 10 where a app has an account that has to be linked to a plex account)

It’s not exactly setup so that the xbox/windows login is directly connected to a managed user, but it at least allows each Xbox login to auto sign-in for a specific managed user. Now, if a UWP app comes out for the Xbox some of this may change, but some restrictions are unlikely to be removed.

Baby steps I guess…fingers crossed that we at least get a UWP app. After that I’ll pray for MS to loosen up the restrictions.

Another instance where it feels like I’ve made a mistake by creating managed users instead of real plex accounts.

Yep, I feel the same way. I’m thinking it would be better for me to just give up and create plex accounts rather than hope for a miracle.

I’m not gonna lie, I was using a managed account for my wife’s xbox live account and we ran into the same issues non stop. The biggest thing was the Kinect would switch accounts when it detected her and I left the room and so the app was constantly getting de-linked. Initially it sucked in that she lost her watched status (I basically tried to remember most of what she was currently watching and manually went through marking things as watched to get it back up). After that initial conversion though everything was a lot smoother for us.

So while it does take some extra initial work to convert it over, for me it was completely worth it. And TBH when I switch my kids over I most likely won’t be worrying about their watched status, I’ll let them manually move it over if they want. There most likely is a way to migrate it over in the database, but I didn’t delve that much into it myself.
