For me, calling the app trash is a bit strong. I preferred the layout of the old app but this app isn’t the worst thing ever. Server selection could do with some work, ffwd and rwnd too. Other than that though, it loads quickly, plays everything I’ve chucked at it, so far.
It’s not the dumpster fire some are making it out to be. Yes, it needs some work but it’s really not that bad.
this about nails it on the head, before the old version got kicked the new one was called “plex for xbox one” both could run simultaneously, this was useful for a week at most then what said below happened, my guess is they wanted to remove the two duplicate icons that appeared the same on the app list

Exactly - just bug fixes for the new app - no mention of giving us the option to use the old app until they fix this mess. I don’t want an apology - i want the old app back. It’s already been stated a couple of times the old version WILL NOT be back. Can’t be more clear than that.
Well that’s just stupid then.
Basically, we have no choice but to Lump this broken ****.
Just took me 50 mins to watch a 20 min episode.Makes no sense, you have a working App, why nor deploy it until you fix this crap. Or at least give people a choice?
Basically you cut off your face to spite your nose!
My understanding is that MS changed their backend framework and the Plex app had to be rewritten basically from the ground up to work with it. The old app is incompatible with the old framework. So there is no going back, unfortunately.
Hopefully if my facts are off someone will correct meNope, you pretty much got it right.
They had an app identified as “Plex”.
To release the same identified app under the new framework it replaced the previous edition and it is a forwards only process, the framework MS have in place does not allow apps from the old framework to be added any more.
Basically now that they’ve moved forward with upgrading the app (rather than introducing a distinct second, newer, app) they are unable to move backwards. The tactical error, in my opinion, was not releasing this new app as a distinct entity but rather ‘overwriting’ the old one.
Had they just released this new app as something else, then there would have been numerous benefits:
1\ the people who really, desperately, wanted the features only available in the new app, could use it
2\ the people who cannot upgrade their PMS due to platform restrictions (thinking mostly older/low-power NAS) would still be part of the Plex ecosystem under the legacy app
3\ the people who rely on subtitles would still be watching shows with subtitles without major issues under the legacy app
4\ the people who find the UI an abhorrent mess wouldn’t be jumping to another media platform, but rather continuing to use the legacy app whilst the new app found its legs
5\ people would be able to bug-test and report issues at their discretion by selectively using the new app whilst retaining the ability to switch back to the legacy app for uninterrupted viewingI could go on.
Regardless of whether I am retained as a Plex user I sincerely hope that Plex Inc. learns from this experience.
And what exactly is the time lol?
Edit: actually i think that is the time it ends, oh well lol
Top right corner is current time for you. Now add episode length to current time and will give you bottom right value.
Thanks, i noticed straight after, hence the edit. It is indeed the time the video will end.
In other news the Film + TV native app now plays all mkv on your server, source quality, full surround (it never used to). And, it actually plays better than plex ever did, especially surround/image quality. I would still rather use plex when it i works good again tho.
Film and Tv app/personal/media server/your server/videos/folders Tadaaaa!
It is a good standby for now.
Its confounding, if the plex app is just a ‘wrapper’ to the xbox player, why does plex have so many problems here that aren’t present on Film/TV app??

On many platforms third party developers don’t have access to the full functionality of the platform player with respect to first party developer
Well they solved another issue within about 5 days on the Plex media server, I seriously hope to see this new platform return to some of its roots, most important are the libraries on the left and the nice side scrolling dashboard. And let’s make sure no function gets lost in this once it’s done, and I would prefer to keep the original version on roku for a good while, roku will let you install apps they don’t support directly, keep that in mind if you start trying to mess with the roku platform
I like the vertical scrolling dashboard better. To each his own though.

Then why don’t they develop their own like others do? I mean they are getting paid for this to work.

This is and always was Plex policy: to concentrate on the server and server features, to rely on transcoding to support different formats, therefore there’s not the need to develop a whole media player for any platform they want to develop a client for and to keep all these custom developed players in line with specs. They don’t want to go the VLC route and I think only in Roky they developed their own player because the standard one was too limited.
Well on Android they are using a modified version of ExoPlayer2 which is no secret and some users are helping to test it. It’s also required for LiveTV playback on Android. Then there is PMP which is built on top of MVP and is customized. They even hired a main developer from the project to join Plex.
So custom players aren’t out of the question on all platforms. It probably depends on what’s available, how well the default system player is, etc…
edit: damnit, caught up on last few pages of posts. lost hope of redemption here.
edit2: god damnit, read even further up the thread. glad i’m not alone
but this is hopeless.
dont want to start another thread, but just came here to vent.
i absolutely hate the xbox one plex rewrite … hate it! please dont go there, plex devs.
the UI is trash, makes no sense (i guess it goes with the xbox dashboard in that way)
awkward to use, menus with weird icons, hidden/buried under many others!! ugh what a nightmare to operate.
additionally, new plex app doesnt play a LOT of the content now, and THERE IS NO WAY TO ALTER the quality seemingly unless i start to play… and if i start to play a show it CANT (in the new app) play, popup, back to main screen. …omg, i swear /manrage /nerdrage takes over and i curse a lot.
what a step back in functionality, so frustrating to use this thing!
i’m sorry, but i just hate it. i will get a roku or chromecast if this does not change, i guess i will have to. but it will make me resent plex, for no good reason.
please, for love of god, let us revert to the old version, or give some options on ‘classic’ layout skin in your player app…
/disappointed and annoyed at same time
I agree 100%, same boat here.
I tried out the PMP 2.0 preview a while back (for MacOS) and absolutely hated it. I figured since it was still in preview after 3+ months, Plex devs were rethinking the UI design. Then updated my Xbox last weekend and :s . I didn’t even use it long enough to see if any of the bugs mentioned here still existed. I just cursed out loud and shut it off…
Seriously, why support separate Libraries if you are just going to merge content based on Media Type?
I can see how some people might want to view multiple PMS Libraries at the same time, but I do NOT. A preference to allow the user to view a single PMS or multiple needs to be added.
I could go on, but I think everyone else has already enough.
11 pages so sorry if Im asking again… But whats with the xbox one app and not connecting to a server ???
Worked perfect before update now I cannot access my server… But It sees it and say off line but on my phone I can access it…
Have uninstalled plex app on xbox and same thing happens. Very frustrating
i realize it’s not a fix for everyone, but …
logging in via Xbone Edge browser ( http://app.plex.tv ) has fixed this ridiculous native app for me =)

But you can’t play any 4K content. At least it doesn’t work for me.

yeah, it probably tries to stream it via internet, it probably wont be ‘local’ ? unsure how that works.
not for everyone ![]()
