xTeVe IPTV DVR thinks Series is a Movie

I am using IPTV with xTeVe, when I try to record a series Plex thinks it is a movie and I can’t record it like a series.

The recording options only show up as a Movie. It does this with everything. Even news programs.

Are you using xmltv?
If you are and don’t have a category set in the file to series it defaults to movie.

So I bet you can only choose your movie folder as well.

Edit: in the 2 seconds I took to write this I apparently already forgot you pointed that out.

This is all new to me, but your comment made me look to see if I could update the channel category in xTeVe. And I can, a bit slow as I have to do each channel on its own.

But it will work! Thanks

No don’t do that. I literally was in your shoes yesterday.

What it boils down to for the most part is your categories. Example: your screen shot is USA entertainments, on top right search for that group, the do the bulk edit button.

Then a check box appears for each row, in the header you can select all. When you have everything selected edit a row like you just did in that screen shot. Turn it to series and all turn to series.

If you search ESPN, sports etc do sports.

If you have a local group like abcs fox’s etc change those to series.

The issue I see vs a real epg is that this is set at the channel level. What happens when there is a football game on abc? Or a movie, etc.

I’m currently in the process to figure out how to get a better epg that is more dynamic etc.

The bulk edit works good!
Plex’s way of handling this is weird. Windows media center never had these issues.

Although i guess this is the issue with the xmltv file.

Yeah, I am trying what I can to figure some things out. I have an open thread right now, but with the xmltv file we pass with xteve, if a sports team is playing, I cant choose to record that specific sports team.

So I brought in one channel and tossed it the pac-12 network for a football game, and there was the ability to choose a team. So they are either using a different format with the epg, or there are additional categories or perhaps formatting that needs to be done for plex to pick this up.

Sad to say this, but I’m currently using wireshark to see if I can find out any of the actual data that is being passed to plex while receiving these 2 channels so I can see what the heck the differences are.

I’m guessing its probably a different format, but hopefully I will find out.

I am playing around with Jellyfin server right now. It seems to be much more responsive than Plex DVR. The front end is not a nice but everything seems much more smooth. Everything is working, including watching currently recording programs on any device plus I can start recordings from any device, even on mobile.

The EPG data in the xmltv file should have the season and episode information for the series. If not included or not usable by Plex (or Emby or Yellyfin) the recording will considered Movie.
With good information in the xmltv data file, xTeVe/Plex live tv works quite good.
