Yet another Plex media server freezes constantly for no reason

Server 1.24.5.5173 (before/after Optimie/CleanBundles)

I enclose a log archive where .log are dated upon after the last “block”, .1.log after the previous, 2.log after the ante-previous, etc.

“block” here means that the web client nor apps can’t reach the server. I have to quit (menu in the menubar is functioning) and restart to access again. Block (like latest) is usually happening while the server is “idle” (no playback).

Do you have these settings enabled:

  • Use hardware acceleration when available
  • Use hardware-accelerated video encoding

yes (sorry, I don’t get a “notification” when I’m being replied to).

@diligiant How often does your PMS freeze? Can you disable Hardware Acceleration when available for a period of time to see if this reduces the frequency of freezing.

One more thing, does your Mac have any pending updates?

done (disable)
From several times a day to once a day.
I haven’t switched yet to Monterey but running latest Big Sur (always).

I found the server freezed this morning.

Last messages of .1.log are like and ending with these two.

Is hardware decoding used also when processing directories ? FYI, there was no directory to process these last hours.Preformatted text

@diligiant Can you share these recent logs?

Disabling hw acceleration doesn’t visibly change things.

Just had a freeze. No media was playing, media was being added.
I enclose this morning and now post-restart logs.

Any updates on this? I just added media myself and it crashed the server. Need to end the PMS task and start it back up for it to work. However it’ll crash on it’s own even without adding media.

@diligiant There are several errors pointing to a sync job to an iPad. Are you or one of your users still using Sync on an iPad? Check the Sync Status in your Settings.

If that is the case how do we have a user switch to downloads? is it as easy as having them update the client and or sign out/sign in?

I think I am the point where I may just need to rebuild my library to avoid this issue. I been using Plex for more than 8 years and have never had this constant disconnect issue.

Can you share your logs?

Yes, the logs from the last 2 days is when it was crashing contently.

.

It just crashed again and was able to grab the logs right before I restarted the PMS. Plex Media Server Logs_2021-11-04_16-11-15.zip (8.1 MB)

yes, all my kids have iPads. May you tell me what to grep for to find these errors. I will be more reliable that asking them to get into their account.

What do you want me to do? Delete all syncs? Should sync be avoided “forever”?

Did you find anything in these log files that causes the sever to crash? the only thing I have done on my end is delete the transcode folder which had over 50GB’s and seems my server hasn’t crashed, but at the same time I haven’t used it myself in fear that it would. I see my family using it without any issues.

@diligiant Going back to your OP, the server appears to be unresponsive and you are not able to connect to it so you shutdown the server, correct? When you are attempting to check the server via web browser are you using the hosted app.plex.tv or localhost:port?

Looking at your logs again there are a couple ERROR entries reported when scanning files in your libraries. With your zipped logs, I’m sorting by Modified and opening all the logs between Plex Media Server.1.log (last log before your shutdown server) and Plex Media Server.2.log.

I’m opening all these log files in my text editor so all the files are searchable. I find the timestamp for when you shutdown your server and search across all the opened log files for that any activity around or before the time you shutdown. The errors can be seen in your Plex Media Scanner Matcher X.log files.

Can you please go through the files that are showing errors and confirm the status of these files? Can you play them with Plex? Can you play them without something other than Plex?

@Zeroknivez Do you use the DLNA service available in Plex? If not, disable it. Also, I’m not seeing a crash in your logs. When you are attempting to check the server via web browser are you using the hosted app.plex.tv or localhost:port?

I do see some files in your Plex Media Scanner Matcher X.log files that showing errors during their scanning. Can you please go through the files that showing errors and confirm the status of these files? Can you play them with Plex? Can you play them without something other than Plex?

Hi, This same issue has been happening to me for over 6 months, I just haven’t bothered to report it (My bad)
I’ll start providing my logs too if it helps identify the issue as its driving me crazy now.
Here is my latest crash attached New Logs.zip (649.2 KB)
