"Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video"

I know there are many threads on this subject, but at the moment I’m not inclined to go through them all.

I just want to know if this message primarily is a server or a client issue?

There’s 2 key scenarios:

  1. the client’s connection is actually too slow – this can primarily happen with WIFI connections
  2. the server is transcoding your video and is not fast enough to deliver a constant stream – most of the times, Plex is able to give the proper error message for that case (something in the way of “Your server isn’t strong enough…”), occasionally there’s some confusion

I am also having such issue ( “Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video.”). Could anybody please tell me how can I solve this issue? Thanks

start with sharing some more details…

  • what setup are we looking at (e.g. NAS vs. dedicated computer running the Plex Server, wired or wireless connections, playback in your home network or remote…)
  • what media do you try to play? e.g. what container (mp4, mkv, avi…), what resolution (4K, 1080p, 720p, SD…), what codecs/specs for video, audio, subtitles…

I installed Plex server in my computer.
I am using wireless connection to watch movies in my TV which is in the same network. Network speed is very good more than 70 Mbps. I updated my fire TV stick to 4K (3rd Generation) one. Previous one (2 nd Generation) still working fine in another TV in the same network. Any suggestion for such error – ( “Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video.”) ? Thanks

Tip 1: Always try to go with a wired connection.

There’s tons of stuff that can get in the way with a continuous good wireless network connection…

  • poor antennas in the TV itself
  • physical obstacles such as walls, furniture…
  • too many other wireless networks interfering with yours

… to name some
Consider… you’re talking about a peak bandwidth… your movies’ average bitrate might be significantly lower… however max bitrates can also be significantly over that average bitrate.

Tip 2: Avoid Transcoding

Sometimes the Plex Client mistakes the being transcoded too slow for the connection being slow. This can happen if your computer is not up to the job of transcoding the video.
Even with a 4K player, there’s tons of stuff to get in the way – e.g.

  • image subtitles (e.g. from DVD/Blu-Rays) – if the player cannot deal with them, Plex will burn them into the video stream
  • combination of container, video codec, audio codec and subtitle codec not supported by the client
  • client restrictions e.g. regarding bitrates for certain streams (video, audio), max. supported audio channels, video encoding levels…

When you access Plex Web while playing your video, you can click on Now Playing. By hovering over the video thumbnail you’ll see further information regarding the playback – including if the video/audio is being transcoded.
