Plex for Xbox One unable to connect to server (1.3.1)

Any one having issues with today’s update?

Mine stopped connecting to my Plex Server on the Lan.

Works on my phone over Lan and Internet.

Everything else works on the Xbox

Fixed it by going into the Plex apps settings and setting Security to “Allow on same network as server”.

Why did this reset after the update? And why cant it use secure connection on Lan?

Mine just turfed after a quick update. Maybe it’s because I’m sick but I can’t for the life of me find "Plex apps setting and setting Security to “Allow on same network as server”.

Little help? Please? Being home sick is less fun without my shows and movies.

My xbox one app won’t even run. Installed, but just got spinning wheel when I tried to run. Uninstalled, rebooted xbox, reinstalled, same thing.
Nothing wrong with server (fine on pc and phone) its the app update that’s a dud!

Open the Plex app on your Xbox One and click the menu button your controller or remote, then select Settings
Took me a while to find.

There is currently an issue where the app refuses to load for some user profiles. Plex is currently in contact with Microsoft trying to resolve/get to the bottom of it. There currently is a workaround that involves temporarily siwtching to another account/guest account and starting the app with that account. After it successfuly starts with the second account you should be able to switch back to your regular account.

More details with the developer are here:

Thanks Ragnar. Changing the security settings worked for me.

Same problem. Changing the security settings got it working. Much appreciated

Ragnar, I needed to quote your solution in order to mark this as answered with your solution, I also added the steps to activate this setting:

To access this setting in the app, use the hamburger button (Three horizontal lines) and select settings. Under security switch the never option to “Allow on same network as server”

This will allow the Xbox to fallback from secure only connection and still use the unsecured connections when on the LAN.

If when you open the settings menu you get just a gray box, this solution will not work for you. That problem means the app is failing to load and the settings menu is unable to fully load. That issue is discussed with a separate workaround in this thread:

Short answer, there is a new fallback security method. The default is to only allow secure connections for the greatest security. For some reason the app isn’t seeing the connection between your server and the Xbox One as secure so the connection is being blocked. When you switch the setting to “Allow on same network as server” you’re telling the app you trust your network and let the connection in anyway.

Once you do connect to the server and you scroll up to the server name and select your server to bring up the list does your server have a green lock next to it?

Even with the work around we want to try and diagnose why the Xbox One isn’t seeing the connection as secured and is stopping the connection until you switch the security setting. If you could a Plex Media Server.log from when you attempt to connect with the setting set to never might also be helpful.

I just get a gray box where the settings should be when I hit that button. So that isn’t a valid workaround for everyone.

Have you tried doing a full reboot of your Xbox One? It sounds like the app either is fully loading or isn’t fully installed. Missing UI elements shouldn’t be caused by the secure connection problem.

Multiple reboots, uninstalled, re-installed. Spinning wheel on launch, and an empty gray box when I hit the button for settings. Backing out of it brings me to the spinning wheel. App is completely busted.

You could try to remove the Xbox from devices on your Plex Server.
This will make the Plex App ask you to login again.

No it won’t. Already tried that.
Also removed the settings from my account. no difference
Already remove my MS account from my xbox; shut it down, removed and attached the power supply, added my MS account back to the xbox, installed it again… still the same problem

Also, no difference if the pc with the Plex Media Server is actually running or not.
Plex just opens into splash screen with a spinning wheel. Using the settings button just gives an grey pop-up with nothing in it.

If you don’t have any active servers and the app is failing to start past the loading screen you’re not having a secure connection issue. It sounds like you’re suffering from the problem in this thread that developers are in contact with Microsoft about:
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/196695/workarounds-for-app-not-starting-loading-past-splash-screen-version-1-3-1

The only current known workaround for that issue is creating either a second xbox account or a guest account to use to load the app at least once. It is caused by the app not gaining access to your user settings folder on the backend and failing to load.

I have been experiencing the same issues as those above with the latest Xbox One update for Plex.
None of the offered solutions to date have worked for me to get the XBox One app working so fingers crossed a patch is released soon

For all those in the same predicament you can work around the problem by using the Plex Web App from the browser on the XBox One - just go to plex.tv and launch. In some ways it is even better than the native XBox One application. The added bonus for me is that I can also access my Premium Music library with the web app were the XBox App would always fail for me with a never ending progress bar.

I hope this helps others to get their Plex viewing fix while we wait for a patch to be released to fix the problem.

Plex get it right.
same subnet unsecured should be configurable on server.
why make the app-player have to break requiring to turn on an option?

This what I did after I uninstalled and reinstalled, and it worked…

-uninstall, reinstall
-removed xbox one from plex server
-relauched and reauthenticated with code

Having the same issue as VexatationStation. Can’t access the settings. Multiple uninstalls and installs. Multiple power downs / power ups. Created a new Xbox account and logged in with that. Same thing. This app was working fine until the last update a couple of days ago. Now it’s a brick.

I don’t see any “Settings” option at all. Only “Manage App” which only gives me the option to uninstall it
