Why is Plex not matching my movies?!

I have a library of over 300 movies and I took a lot of time to make sure that filed and named everything precisely as plex instructs. But on the vast majority of my library items I am getting no meta data. For a lot of them if I click on it and then select “fix incorrect match” and then click “auto match” and select “the movie database” it will pull the metadata for me. But I have to do every single one individually that way. And I have already selected the movie database as the agent for my movie library. Even still, their are others that will still not match with anything. I even tried searching by their IMDb ID as suggested at the bottom of https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201018497-Fix-Incorrect-Match-Match, but still absolutely nothing. If plex cannot match metadata then it is of absolutely no use to me. What is going on with my server?

Can you give an example of a title that doesn’t match, and also the complete directory structure and file name? Also, where did you get the videos, what are the file types, and is there embedded metadata? How do you have your agents configured?

My example is:

C:\Users\Administrator\Documents\flix\Aladdin (1992)\Aladdin.m4v

edit: this won’t let me attach files… got to figure out why. one sec…

won’t let me upload attachments… no idea why. 3 browsers, 2 computers.? what I can say is that my agent for plex movie is at the top of my list and checked. my agent for the movie database is the movie database at the top, followed by plex movie, both checked.

So this bit is odd. After trying every form of refresh button, update button etc. i dragged the file out of the folder, and then back. and it came in properly. not practical to do for hundred of nested files in folders… but why would that make a difference?

The name should be Aladdin (1992).m4v

Any time you name a movie, always go to IMDB and make sure you have the name and the year in parentheses.

To add to @kegobeer-plex excellent advice - if that M4V file has embedded metadata in the Title Field that could bork your match.

  1. remove bogus info in the Title Field
    or (much easier)
  2. drag and drop Local Media Assets to the bottom of your Agent lists:
    https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200241558-Agents

Media/Movies/The Hunger Games (2013)/The Hunger Games (2013).mkv

No embedded meta data. The movie database agent has “local media assets (movies)”, “The Movie Database”, and “Plex Movie” all checked and in that order.

The Hunger Games came out in 2012.

Confirmed:

Two rights don’t make a wro… wait… yes they do.

I have the same issue, it stopped saving metadata as soon as I subscribed to plexpass!

Ok, I’m going to resist… (it’s hard, Man)

I feel duty-bound to mention FileBot (link in my signature) would have caught that error in .00098045 seconds.

Going to resist what? I just added a new library to test out scanning and it picks up only the film title, synopsis, date, poster etc.

This files have metadata in my old library.

that was a typo in my message. It is saved as 2012. but that’s beside the point. I have hundreds of movies that are not obscure at all that are getting no metadata. Stay focused guys.

That was focused. You gave a title, it wasn’t correct. I can’t read minds, I can only go with what is posted.

Scanner logs will help, along with server logs. Close the Plex Server, wait a minute, restart the server, wait two minutes, initiate a scan, after it’s finished close the server and upload the scanner and server logs.

How do I initiate a scan? Is that “refresh all” or “update libraries”?

Go to your Movies library and click on Update Library.

trying to send logs. but all the buttons above the message box are unresponsive. I can’t attach anything.

Yeah, the button bar on this forum is wonky for some of us - been that way for weeks now. You can stick the logs on dropbox or similar and provide the link.
