I’ve noticed that during this past week, plex seems to have stopped matching ANY movies automatically and today it is not event DETECTING a new TV show I added.
I want to move some movie library folders to a new drive, so I copy the old folder to the new drive and then add it to the library. Plex seems to detect the new movies, but doesn’t match them. If I manually click match, almost invariably a single match is found with 100% accuracy, so I choose it and things work great.
After the 100th movie, this is really getting old.
FWIW, this even happens if I add a movie to an existing movie library folder. For example, the file “Onward (2020).mp4” (no metadata) did not match automatically, but matched almost instantly when I told Plex to “match”
Just curious, are the same agents not used when I choose “match” from the movies “triple dot” menu? Why would they work perfect from the menu and not automatically?
But I’ll try what you suggest and hope magic happens.
…later… No change. Still not auto-matching anything.
That’s the preview build for the new scanner/agent. If you are using this new library, it might not be set to auto-scan. Might be worth asking in that thread. New Plex Media Server movie scanner and agent preview
@JuiceWSA: Another recent example is “L:\Movies-O\Octopussy (1983).mp4” According to VLC and MetaX, the only metadata says the title is Octopussy and the Date is 1983. PLUSALL of these movies were matched fine when originally added, but it appears that no attempt was made this time. I have reviewed the debug logs for the media scanner, but since I am not intimate with the code, I cannot possibly say what is NOT present, other than I don’t see much of anything about matching when the movie is processed.
@anon18523487 I do not recall actually requesting the new version. Surprisingly (to me, at least) the Agents screen in the settings still looks exactly the same as it always has, as far as I can tell. But I will ask over there, thanks. – [edit] Whoops! The very first thing on that page contradicts your comment: in order to try the new agent Download the preview PMS version 1.19.5.2861 but I am at an earlier version. Plus the new agents do not apply to existing libraries, either, which I was clear about using.
My issue is happening when I add a single movie to an existing library or when I add a folder FULL of duplicate movies (that already ALL previously matched!) to an existing library [in preparation for removing the original folder containing those movies.]
My issue is still happening after I stopped Plex, deleted EVERYTHING in the agent cache folder and restarted Plex. The computer has also rebooted a few times since the problem started, too.
@JuiceWSA OK, followed the procedure completely, even used MetaX to remove the metadata tag that Handbrake added to identify itself as the encoder (there was nothing else) and I still get the same results.
I am also seeing the new movie appear and disappear from the home screen’s recently added movie list. It just “pops” on and then off as I move around the screen in the web client (in chrome). I will attach the logs. Plex Media Server Logs_2020-06-05_21-18-43.zip (4.2 MB)
[edit] FWIW, I added a new episode of a TV show and it matched immediately and downloaded show metadata within a minute. But it won’t do movies in any of the several movie libraries I have tried.
@anon18523487 you may be correct about the version, but I had never seen the linked thread before clicking on your message – but I am signed up for beta updates, so perhaps Plex updated itself automatically to the version with the new agent stuff. Does that mean that pre-existing movie libraries will never auto-update (despite that setting being checked)?
Yes, the LINKS have been updated to 1.19.5.2889-52a517a93, but the instructions at the beginning still reference 1.19.5.2861.
@JuiceWSA There is no duplicate of Onward. It had previously been in a live action movie library by mistake and I was relocating it to my animated movie library by moving the file. As of this morning, Onward shows as the most recently added movie in the animated movie library AND when I click “More >” and then click on my server name at the top of the list, but Onward is not listed on the normal home screen at all. So somehow it is newest and not new at all at the same time on different screens.
The ‘Version’ you get is selected via the little dropdown at Server/Settings/General.
If it say ‘Beta’ - something Betaish might have happened. <—I saw that you disabled Beta Updates. Probably wise at this moment.
Yea, something about that just isn’t Kosher.
Plex Dance Onward one… more… time… and let’s get Moviefan some fresh logs.
Does that ‘Beater’ Version have any special new things in the Agent Area - or anywhere else? <— like a switch that reads: ‘Enable Wrench/Spokes Injection Cycle’…lol
@Xhaka may also want to stop by for a Field Consultation. May be advantageous.
OK, I did the Plex dance again for Onward and will attach the logs. FWIW, the removal appears to start at about 06:10 in Plex.Media.Scanner.2.log. I think the file was detected again at about 06:12.
It still has not matched, or if it did, nothing shows as matched for it in the web or roku clients. There is no metadata, although there are chapters – if they are metadata, then that is all there is. While it failed to match, at least this time it appears to be solidly included as the most recently added movie on the home screen this time.
(Side note: maybe Plex should offer something to view, remove and maybe even edit movie metadata if it going to be such an important thing to verify existence and/or remove!)
For the version, my settings/general page has this line:
So it does not appear to indicate any sort of beta or test version, but I have not idea what it would show if it was one of those. I only know I had no interest in creating a test library to try out the new agent feature, so I did not choose to download the new stuff. If I have it, the beta channel gave it to me.
As it stands on my system, movies never auto-match (despite the setting enabling that features) but TV shows auto-match just fine. I have tried several different movie libraries, too, so if it is library related, it appears to have hit ALL of the movies libraries at the same time. And it had worked just fine until the most recent update. Sigh. It is getting to the point where I spend more time “dancing” with plex than using it for what it is supposed to do.

E:\PlexData is the ONLY folder on the drive, which is reserved for the Plex Media Server directory (relocated using the option in server settings because my SSD boot drive is kinda small.) I have not done anything special to clean things and was unaware of the update before before today. I have no idea why the Plex updater stopped adding updates there – unless it only does that when it actually updates automatically. It may be that I notice and click the update button in settings before that, so no copy is made?
Regardless, I downloaded PlexMediaServer-1.19.4.2902-69560ce1e-x86.exe but it failed to install after uninstalling Plex as Otto directed, so I am rebooting to try again. --interesting-- The failed Plex installed started up again on its own after the reboot. and succeeded.
I decided to try a different movie (file name “Robinson Crusoe (1997).mp4”) and it matches right up – to Robinson Crusoe (2001). In fact, even if I choose “Robinson Crusoe 1997 100%” from the fix match results, I get the 2001 version. Gotta love crappy server metadata.
But my problem is resolved. Apparently, the version I had did include the new agents while breaking the old movie agents and that version was inadvertently released in a normal/beta channel. Rolling back, with a reboot fixed it.
Sorry if I was a bother and thanks to all for your help!
I couldn’t have helped much.
I have Onwards in both my main 1080p movies directory and my 4K HDR directory.
The 4K’s all have .nfo’s. The 1080p’s dont (yet)!
Either way with or without .nfos’ Plex identified Onwards no problem at all with the new scanner.
