I did a little digging (looking at posted) and noticed that there are at least 9 different posts related to improving collections specifically for movies. If we could, it would show that this is probably one of the single most requested features right now at over 2,468 likes (as of this post) and over 24k views of the various conversations.
I recall first starting to use Plex and being dismayed at how they handle collections as filters. A more useless implementation couldnāt have been conceived.
Their system of collecting suggestions seems to have as its motive to dissuade discussion of it by pointing out that someone has already asked for it in a previous topic and that you should instead show your support by liking the dead topic.
Why collecting movies into collections in the main view is beyond Plexās means to implement is beyond me, when obviously a) they realized they needed something, ie they implemented a filter to this effect and b) they obviously had the resources to implement the useless filter.
Kodi has an excellent implementation of collections and on the TV I use Kodi I enjoy its existence immensely.
Your first thread āMultiple Cuts Of Movieā is not the same as all the other collections threads.
Multiple Cuts is talking about grouping a Directors Cut and Theatrical Cut or maybe various resolutions of the same movie under a single movie entry and being able to choose which one to view.
The collections feature (and making it more prominent is about grouping all the Star Wars movies together or all the Marvel super hero movies together, or making a children movies collection, etc.
@kamererhouse, fair point on the āMultiple Cuts of Movieā - it is not the same however it is still pretty close as it does relate to the idea of a ācollectionā of some object within the Movies area Ideally a collection could be either or both at the same time.
@ravensorb ā They are unrelated. Especially from an implementation standpoint.
Movie Cuts are more like the extra content tags where you have multiple files under a single movie listing. i.e. -featurettes, -shorts, -deleted, etc. Plex needs a way to recognize and let users select those separate files.
Collections have already been implemented and are about grouping completely different movies into a single ācollectionā. Most of the related threads are about redesigning the existing feature so itās more usable.

The current ācollectionsā filter looks like it was assigned to an intern that preferred to be working on something else at the time. Totally useless. It took me following a step by step guide off the internet to even find it the first time.
Didnāt they admit recently that they didnāt think it was something many people really wanted?
Suggests very little attention is actually paid to the feature requests forum (not sure why that would be a surprise, doesnāt seem to be much attention paid to the users at all).

Does anyone have any thoughts on why kodi can cope with movie collections and TV seasons and plex canāt. I donāt understand the inās and outs of programming, and so I donāt know what is holding them back. They even have a āuse collection dataā option in library settings (which I cannot get to work as it is) so why not use it like everyone wants them to.
My opinion is that they are chasing new users with new usage cases and less invested in refining current uses. Iāve seen tons of e-mails about Cloud Plex, new photo timelines, etc. none of which Iām particularly interested in, but seem geared towards capturing new users who would then presumably buy a new Plex Pass which translates into revenue for Plex.
Since Iāve already paid, keeping me happy would be further down on the list. Whatās the worst I could do, stop using my already paid for lifetime subscription, āoh noes!ā.
I could really use the collections feature, especially now that Iāve completed my Star Wars movies. Theyāre spread all over the movie library now, instead of in a nicely devoted collections view.
Currently itās implemented as a filter, which is essentially useless (I never personally use filters). Nobody Iāve seen knows why they didnāt add it in the main view where itād actually be useful.
I havenāt found a thread for this, seems a really simple request though.
I would KILL for a checkbox to hide any collection with only one item.
It seems half my movies have a collection named on TMDB. There are also quite a few that have awful sequels that I will never add to my library so they donāt need a collection. They should be reserved for groups of movies within the library.

I donāt understand what you are describing. Are you saying collections were created automatically for you based on TMDB data? Can you list a few popular movie examples? The only collections in my database are those I had to create manually.

you can check this feature in the respective agent settings (settings > server > agents). Pick the āThe Movie Databaseā entry and click settings⦠there youāll find the 1st checkbox āUse collection info from The Movie Databaseā.
Personally Iām not a big fan and prefer setting the collection names manually (e.g. if Iāve only got the original Shrek movie, I donāt need a collection of it for the Shrek series not in my libraries).

oh⦠and I missed mentioning⦠of course this would be even better if my self-managed collections could actually show-up in the library with icons of their own, sorting options and potentially even their own extras ā not just as a filter.
It would be nice to see this get implemented. Itās the only reason Iām using Kodi still on my primary box. Really donāt understand why this would be ignored for as long as it has been.
Also⦠300+ new likes in ~6 months should deserve some attention ā especially considering the totals and that thereās too many ranting threads where people apparently gave up their hopes to ever see this implemented.
I desperately want to see this implemented (this and general extras for TV shows⦠but thatās another matter) ā so please keep voting.
Iāve been thinking about this topic for a while, trying to figure out why it might be taking so long.
It seems like there are two basic ideas being suggested.
A: Collections are presented inside existing libraries similar to a sub folder.
B: Collections are presented at the top level like we see with Playlists.
Personally Iām leaning more toward the B option with the caveat that they make it cross library compatible. I would like to create a Star Wars or Marvel, or Christmas collection, etc. that groups movies and TV shows under a single manually ordered collection.
Maybe they should implement both though so that the libraries automatically show āfoldersā at the top for any ācollectionā inside the library, but also a top level collection view that shows all collections together across the entire system.
