Recordings, and the individual schedules for episodes are disappearing off the EPG guide and not recording. This happened to me once a few weeks ago when the first episode of Living Biblically just didn’t show up, and disappeared off the guide. I figured it was a freak thing because it was a brand new show. Not so…
During the episode of Gotham shown for yesterday, both The Big Bang Theory (7pm) and Young Sheldon (7:30pm) showed on the guide and ready to record earlier in the day. I checked things after 9pm when I sat down to watch these three episodes and two of them disappeared without a trace.
I might attribute this to having set up BBT eons ago, but Young Sheldon is fairly new, and I set up Living Biblically just a few weeks back.
I’ve seen that issue before. In that case, the items remain in the schedule, and show complete, yet hang for some reason. I had it a while back and was among the lucky that got fixed.
This is a bit different in that things are entirely falling off the schedule at some point and are probably not recording at all. The two items were there earlier in the day… Now they don’t show at all.
Did you check your Live TV’s .grab folder to see if it partially recorded or an empty folder was in there? PLEX cleans out the .grab folder on startup.
No… and unfortunately that’s probably something I can’t check. My server auto-restarts daily at 4am. It should still appear on the schedule though, right? It’s as if the recording instance never occurred.

The last show I noticed that got stuck at 100%, after an hour or two just disappeared. I looked at the logs you posted. First things first, I am not really sure what most of the logs even mean, you will need a dev to give you a real answer. I however did notice a lot of errors. Like SQLITE3, DVR:Recorder, DVR:Grabber, FFMPEG and a Cloudflare ban to tmsapi.plex.tv. I did not see any “Notification: Recording” for The Big Bang Theory or Young Sheldon, I did see them for your other shows. Did you or anyone else watch live tv at that time? I did see a few “Notification: Recording Live TV - Session” between Gotham and The Tonight Show. What time does The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon air in your area?
BBT and Young Sheldon aired alongside the Gotham episode. I did attempt to watch Gotham while it was recording (success), but decided to wait for the ComSkip to process and picked it back up later. Gotham runs 7-8, while BBT runs 7:00-7:30 and Young Sheldon runs 7:30-8. All of these things appeared correctly on the EPG earlier in the day.
Somewhere in there I did attempt to tune some live stations that I knew were on the weaker signal side, having been surprised they were added to the lineup. No luck there. They didn’t load. I have 4 total tuners. None of this should have locked more than the needed amount to record successfully.
These are not things I would think to cause items to drop off the EPG. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve heard of anything causing an item to drop from the EPG. It would stand to reason, that if it did at some point pop off the EPG, that no recording instance would occur.
Another point of interest… these are all CBS shows.
I went back and looked at the logs during that time, at 19:00 and 19:30 these errors occur.
Mar 08, 2018 19:31:00.435 [7280] ERROR - Unable to find title for item of type 5

Mar 08, 2018 19:31:31.330 [7280] ERROR - DVR:Grabber: Starting media grab failed.
I am guessing that it could not get the title from the EPG, maybe its related to all the SQLITE3 errors.
I think I’ve located all the relevant references. Sorry if I’m repeating you… just excited that I made some sense of a log… [I believe the numbers in brackets tie to the show or instance]

I thought it might be a good idea yesterday to screengrab the list of the days recordings. As you can see, today, Living Biblically has gone missing. No recording found.
I just checked my recording schedule and all of my shows between the hours of 7:00PM and 8:00PM have disappeared.
I can go to the program guide and look under New Episodes Tonight and they are gone there also. I am still running NextPVR with another set of tuner cards and the shows are listed in their guide as new programs.
This bug needs to get squashed as soon as possible. I am looking at other DVR options now… Hopefully Plex can get the bugs sorted out as I do believe this is the best DVR to date.
This has happened to me before with American Ninja Warrior and in the last few days with The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. In my case, the shows were scheduled to record, but when I happened to look at the individual episodes before recording, they just had generic episode data (not specific titles). They then were not recorded and disappeared from the recording schedule altogether. I just had to do a manual guide update to fix the recent Colbert issues.
If you look at the EPG for both Plex and Emby you will clearly see Plex doesn’t have this episode for tonights recording marked as NEW while Emby does. So depending on your settings Pex will remove this from your schedule if you are only recording new episodes.
Interesting and 2nd to this problem but Plex also shows the old channel mapping for NBC. Even with mapping setup in Plex it doesn’t/won’t use the new Comcast lineup.
Hi @cayers! In my case, these episodes are new, and the setting is to only record new episodes. In each case, these recordings appeared as they should on the EPG, marked as new. In the case of Big Bang Theory, this has been my setting since the inception of Plex DVR. The pics I posted earlier for Living Biblically are as good as I’ve been able to do up to this point, short of taking hourly screenshots of my recording schedule.
Somehow… these things are dropping off the guide? I’m theorizing, as all I have are my screenshots and logs as evidence. The logs seem to indicate that Plex still keeps the recording scheduled, but has nothing to reference back to when the actual recording attempt occurs, producing an error.
Thank you for responding. Any thoughts you might have would be greatly appreciated.
You will need to check the episode before it is going to record to see if it’s still NEW or not.
Looking at your pictures it does show it thinks it’s new BUT when it checks again before recording it will get removed. For example the Law & Order SVU I just showed will fall off your schedule right before it’s set to record OR if you remove the series and add it back again.
What is unclear and I haven’t checked is to see if this is due to new software or to crappy GraceNote EPG data (most likely). DVR is only as good as it’s data.
Living Biblically is a pretty good example. It’s only broadcast 3 total episodes to date, of which Plex DVR has only picked up one successfully. I would think it impossible for episodes of this nature to not be NEW.
I don’t know the process, but it would make sense if it double checks NEWness before recording each instance… and the data went faulty somewhere in between the initial schedule, and the actual recording time. All theory.
Here’s what it looks like for next week:
I double checked, but so far it appears like any other NEW episode set to record that I have. I’m at work, so sometimes not all of the icons show as they should. I can’t tell if there’s supposed to be a NEW indicator in the episode details.
