Ipv6 support for myplex

Hi,

I just ran across this post http://forums.plexapp.com/topic/64389-publish-server-via-ipv6/ and since I didn't find any feature request for it yet here it is. :)

I know since this is aws wonderland there is no ipv6 support for ec2 instances yet. Except you do it via the load balancer which has ipv6 support.

But an api call to myplex to store the ipv6 address of the server is all that is needed atm :) Well and probably some fixes in the clients.

EDIT: BNO did a add few more infos: https://forums.plex.tv/topic/163242-feature-request-ipv6-support-for-pmsplexweb/#Comment_934917

Update: Possible workaround: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/982002/#Comment_982002

BNO did a Blogpost to explain it in more detail what he did:

Yes, I really do need this feature finally so I can access my media again.. :(

+1 IPv6 is good.

I really, really need this. Right now my whole Plex installation is useless. The only place I can access it is at home, where XBMC can do the job just as well.

But I'd really like to stream it to my Surface RT, now that my internet is so fast... ;-)

Does this checkbox not work? http://i.imgur.com/LpsNv2s.png?1

It does, but apparently it only affects local connections via IPv6, not the publishing process to myPlex in general.

And to those wondering "But Plex Media Server already supports IPv6" - yes it does, but the myPlex Service doesn't.

Think of myPlex as a DynDNS Service. And it currently only supports IPv4, but not IPv6.

In fact, for this feature to be implemented, there is no need to have IPv6 on the myPlex Servers, because IPv6 Clients usually run some form of Dual Stack that allows them to speak with the IPv6 as well as the IPv4 world. However if the IPv6 user's ISP uses DS-Lite, than he can only accept incoming connections on his IPv6 address but he can't open ports on the IPv4 address since that address resides on some gateway in the ISP's network and not on the user's router. In essence if you have IPv6 and DS-Lite, than all your IPv4 traffic is tunneled via IPv6 to some v4 gateway on the ISP's network.

So the Software that runs the myPlex Service must be able to receive the IPv6 Address as part of the Metadata from the User's Plex Media Server and pass it to any Plex Clients that connects. But it can operate over IPv4 just like it already does.

We really need this. ! 1+

myplex not working over ipv6 sucks if you want multi users etc. because without working myplex that wont work on the local network.

If any if you live in germany and use unitymedia

Get a horizon recorder, that thing can't use IPv6 and you will get a native IPv4 again.

Still IPv6 support would be great, I just think it will take some more time. As for me, I managed to get my native ipv4 back

Living in Germany but with a different cable provider.

Still, I don't want to buy another device just so I can justify getting IPv4 again.

Sure, as a mandatory extension of the IP range IPv6 is still not quite necessary, but it has been implemented for a whole while now in the underlying technology, so adding it to myPlex shouldn't be a decision that needs to be forced upon the developers.

If for no other reason than not needing to do it later. Before long it will be necessary.

I for one have gone back to pure XBMC for now, I had hoped to use Plex with my tablets, but that's simply impossible right now...

Nice info , but paying 10 Euro a month just to get Ipv4 back is not what i want. They should simply give you dualstack if you ask for it. Since it seems not to be such a big problem if they can give it to you with horizon.

Im not paying 10 euros either, just that you know, and I wouldn't have done that if they asked me to

Voted for this feature. I think it's time that Plex starts to support this before it's too late and they have to drop people. Sooner or later we will have a part of the world going over on IPv6 (let's hope that it's sooner than later) and Plex will have to make changes. However, depending on their current situation, they might not be able to implement it for the my.plexapp.com. It is possible that the servers of Plex are located in a datacenter that currently does not support the IPv6 routing, in which case it's not the fault of Plex that they don't fully support it yet.

I'm having the same problem (Unitymedia in NRW, Germany) and i can't wait to get PLEX working properly. I just bought a Chromecast and really want to use PLEX on that thin so... yeah :/

+1 for this. I'm going to do some workarounds in the next days

-Raspberry PI with openVPN tunneling ipv4 through my ipv6 sixxs tunnel

Horizon is getting IPv6 Support soon, but I was told I can keep my IPv4.

Anyhow, we really need this :(
