2 ch music files and HDMI: PLEX Web sends 5.1 but PLEX Media Player sends 2 ch stereo

When sending 2 ch music files (mp3, FLAC etc) on my laptop to HT receiver over HDMI, I observed that PLEX Web will send 5.1 ch to receiver (not what I want for 2 ch music) but PMP will send 2 ch stereo over HDMI to receiver (what I want).

Why is this?

I don’t have any passthroughs set in audio settings.

I assume that the web browser simply uses the channel configuration as defined in the system settings of the operating system.
i.e. it is a web browser issue.

In general, use PMP instead of web program for Windows computer?

That’d be my recommendation, yes.
That way you can also listen to surround music in DTS or AC3 format.
The web browser can only Direct Play FLAC 5.1 or 7.1. Everything else gets transcoded to aac 5.1, which reduces the fidelity significantly, IMHO.
