This is a 2 part question problem as they go hand in hand. I have several movies that contain more than English version of the subtitle, such as one being the Forced subtitle, a regular subtitle and one for hearing impaired.
Sometimes while I have getting things ready to place on the storage drive I might change the hearing impaired version to another language so I don’t get a you already have that file error. And it moves over with no problem.
I then go in and name my subtitle files as follows:
Movie (year).eng.forced.srt - and it works
Movie (year).eng.srt - and it works
Movie (year).eng.HI.srt - and when I go to refresh the metadata, that file gets deleted out of the movies folder.
First off, what is the correct name format for subtitle that are for the hearing impaired, or how can we tell PMS that this one subfile is for the hearing impaired. I don’t want to remove them as I have a family member that is slowly moving in the directing of needed to have those types of subtitles.
Second, why is PMS deleting that file when I refresh the metadata?
Also, how can we get PMS to listed it as English and not English - SRT External?
Plex doesn’t delete files. It may not recognize them and thus they aren’t available for selecting in the apps but the actual subtitle file is not deleted.
As for the indication of HI:
Plex ist still lacking here. It simply doesn’t know about HI.
I can only give you a workaround for this: designate a language code other than English for your HI subs. zxx
for instance
That way you can later perform an automatic renaming procedure on your collection, when Plex has learned to recognize HI subs.
Interesting that you say it doesn’t delete them, but I have sat here and watched it does just that. I am running dual monitors so I can open the Plex web interface on one side and have the folder that the subtitle is in on the other side. When I tell it to scan the library, and then watch the folder, that subtitle file disappears from the folder all together. If need be, I will be happy to do a screen video capture of it happening.
I will look at renaming them as you suggested, then again, I might just keep them all in a separate folder on one of my other computers for future use.
My take on this - I quite often have 3 subtitle files and name them as such
tvshow.srt
tvshow.en.srt
tvshow.eng.srt
And interestingly I reckon I have had SRT files disappear also!
I have deleted a corrupt mp4 file and while getting a new one and I am sure the srt have disappeared. :o
Are the both of you are using the SubZero plugin?
While I do have SubZero listed in my plug-ins, I don’t think its active or working right. The only movies that show the option to use subtitles are the ones that I have external sub’s for or they are included in the MKV file, otherwise, I don’t get any subs.

Make sure it is deactivated by disabling it under
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheTVDB
as well as
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase
in both places, remove the checkbox from the line ‘SubZero’
Then repeat the experiment by adding another subtitle file.
Ok, I will try this in a little while. Just got things working again with the Firestick app. So the subtitle will have to wait until I get back from the store. Then I will post back and let you know. Thanks
