2018 Samsung TV app transcoding issue

Server Version#:1.15.4.993
Player Version#:3.92.3

There was a thread on here that was quite long about this issue, but it was closed a couple of months ago, with no solution to the ongoing problem. I too am experiencing this issue, after purchasing a lifetime pass, thinking the hardware transcoding would fix this issue.

However, anytime I attempt to watch a movie on my Samsung TV, a Q8FN running Tizen 4.0, I usually don’t have any issues. Almost all of my movie files will direct play with no problems whatsoever. About half of my 4k content however, requires the audio to be transcode, while the video direct streams.

When that happens, I can get 1:17 into the movie (doesn’t matter which one, they all play that same length) before it buffers. It then shows a blank screen for 30 seconds, then continues to play the video without audio at all.

I have tested this all on a fire stick on loan from my cousin. Watching those same movies on that over wifi instead of ethernet will play without a hitch. All while transcoding the audio and the video both. Which should be far more taxing on the server, yet there is no issue at all playing it that way.

The other thread had narrowed the problem to the player in the app for the Tizen based Samsung TVs. I really hope someone is still working on this problem because I don’t want to have to purchase multiple devices to do what should be doable without them.

If anyone needs any more info about my issues specifically, I will gladly provide it. Until then, I’ll just continue ignoring the portion of my library that is unlucky enough to be encoded with true HD or atmos.

I noticed a similar issue when Direct Streaming, and came to the conclusion that there became an issue when Plex would put the new audio with the old video. So to solve it (I haven’t had any issue since) I got on the Plex app and changed the setting to not allow it to Direct Stream.

Does it degrade the video quality at all?

I haven’t noticed anything yet, but I haven’t tried doing it to 4k yet.

I just tried it with a 4k hdr video. It does solve my issue of the dropping audio, but it also strips away all of the HDR metadata. Leaving the picture washed out and muted. Until they come up with a fix for the direct streaming issues, I’ll just have to manually transcode all my dts or true-HD content to ac3 before being able to watch it.
