24p on xbox one

Hi All,

I just installed Plex on my xbox one and unfortunately I am a bit disappointed. Playback of movie files has a lot of judder. I believe it is because the files are 24hz and Plex is displaying at 60Hz (according to my TV).

Is there a solution to this? Either in Pex itself, or via re-encoding the movies?

Thanks in advance,

Greig

I might be wrong but I believe 3rd party apps are not allowed to change any resolution or frequencies.

Therefore there is nothing Plex can do about this.

Oh dear. That's a pity and a bit bizarre. If I can't watch movies without juddering then it's back to the Apple TV for media viewing. Looks like I'll be cancelling the Plex Plus subscription.

It's real shame that the xbox one doesn't seem to quite be able to bring together all my media. . . Nearly all of it, but not quite everything. It seems like this should be easily fixable, but what do I know?!?!

Just a shot in the dark, but do you have allow 24hz enabled in your xbox display settings?

Yup. I hoped that was the problem, but unfortunately it was enabled.

It might actually be a restriction imposed on 3rd party apps from switching the refresh rate.  (I don't know why they would restrict it, but it isn't the first time or the weirdest thing Microsoft has restricted)

The Apple TV only does 50/60Hz, not 24p. You'll get 2:3 pulldown judder as well. I still really like plexconnect's interface though.

Microsoft doesn’t even switch to 24p in their own Xbox Video app… So it’s literally just the bluray player. So sad…

The ATV only does 50/60hz so you're going to get the same judder on that if you're not then it means you have a tv setting for that HDMI port not set correctly.

You're right, but I don't seem to get any judder, at least not noticeably on the ATV. As far as I can tell, the HDMI settings are identical for both inputs. Weird. It might just have been bad luck with the video I chose. I'll keep tinkering. The promise of the Xbox One and its media capabilities is too good to give up on without a fight.

Can any of the Plex Dev Team Members shed some light on whether there’s actually a restriction from Microsoft to switch to 24p for the Plex client app? If so are you (Plex developers) actively lobbying for Micrsosoft to lift that restriction. Could you point us (the Plex community) to emphasize or lobby for this. Or is it a Plex client app feature to be considered?
I’ve happily been using a Mac Mini with Plex HT outputting at 50 Hz until I watched a 24p movie using a Samsung Bluray player with Plex app. It was like a revelation for the better. I’ve since enabled 24p output on the Mac Mini PHT setup and will not settle for anything else for watching 24p content. Hoping for it using XboxOne as well…

Yes it is a restriction from Microsoft in that no 3rd party apps can switch the display mode 24p, 3d, etc.

I’ve submitted an addon request, if anyone has an xbox live account, feel free to upvote it for the next system update!

The problem is there are numerous different 24p feature requests on the xbox feedback site. One for each app like plex, netflix, amazon, the internal media player and a couple more general ones like your own.

Individually they will never gather enough steam to count, best vote all of them up as it’s an underlining OS issue.

It seems that this is not correct anymore.

See more details on this article:

And finally the app that demonstrates that it is indeed possible for third parties to change the framerate. I just tested it myself and 24p, 50p, and 60p were changed when I selected it in the app.

Even better is the fact that the developer of this app seems to be a super nice guy as he is willing to give the code:
“ Get the code needed to use this features inside your app.“

It would be awesome if the Plex devs could implement this.

No, it is not correct anymore. The old app was on the old xbox framework and did not have access to the new features introduced in the UWP framework. Since the new app was written in the UWP framework it does have access to the newer mediaplayer options added in the UWP framework.

It would be awesome if the Plex devs could implement this.
This is something the developers are looking to implement, but they haven’t give any timeline for when refreshrate switching and audio passthrough features are coming in. (Those were both the two main features the old framework was locked out of using)

Thanks for the explanation and the update!
Looking forward to the time when this works, although it might take a while.

Hello dear Plex Forum!

I am looking for the perfect device for my living room.

If Plex on the Xbox One would adjust the refresh rate.
Would it be exactly the device I am looking for.

Is there any news for 24hz support?

Yes it was added a few months ago. Enable in settings using “display rate switching”
