3 Different Looks - 3 Different Plex Apps

What the hell is going on here guys? haha. I have plex running the same HDR10 file of this movie on my LG 4kHDR monitor in 3 different windows all up at the same time. Using my 2018 Mac Mini going to TB3 eGPU Vega 56 then up to the LG display with display port.

I noticed when using Plex Media Player desktop app there was a message to update. It took me to the site to download the latest desktop app released on 03/27/2020. I Noticed its a new desktop app and not just an update to the Plex Media Player app. Now I’m seeing 3 different types of picture quality. I knew that the browser didn’t convert the color properly on HDR material and thats why I had always used the media player. Now I’m confused which desktop app I should be using. The PMP legacy app shows the image much brighter than the newer release, but i’m not sure if this is reference.

Why don’t you compare it to another device (like a smart TV that can play back HDR files natively)?

You can’t play much in Plexweb - HDR10 is right out.

Plex Media Player is the most capable desktop/htpc app.
PfW is less capable.

Choose the weapon you need when you need it.

I could do that certainly, but there would be a drastic difference in my X940E tv capabilities and this LG UK650-W so I’m not sure it would apples to apples that way.

What does PfW stand for?

Plex ā€˜for’ Windows/Mac

PMP (Plex Media Player) is the app you want to use for those types of files - obviously it’s the best…

Ok thanks for that. So the new release on the site for 03/27/2020 is the PfW/PfM desktop app and shows everything much dimmer than the plex media player legacy desktop app. Not sure why this would be the case.

Heres the two side by side.

Because PMP has much more powerful features than PfWhatever.

PMP remains the biggest dog in the pack.
Use the big dog.

Sounds good to me.

There is a big difference in brightness between the ā€œPlexā€ app and ā€œPlex Media Playerā€ in your screenshot. If you have your screen calibrated on both devices (I don’t mean ā€œlet me call the home theater peopleā€¦ā€ calibrated. I just mean ā€œI went through and used this check discā€ or ā€œI used the Windows Color Calibration Wizard (or Mac equivalent)ā€) then I would think they will be close enough to compare.

The Plex on PC app makes the actress here look like she’s in shadow it’s so dark, compared to Plex Media Player.

You know that if you change to TV View in PMP you can access all those enhanced feature settings? PfW doesn’t have those.

PMP is the only app that can play HDR items (as far as I know and…) - obviously - as your eyeballs have already determined, right?

It ain’t rocket surgery…lol

I’m actually a professional ISF certified calibrator so both my displays are calibrated to the upmost.

I just tried the test using SDR content between the two desktop apps and there is no difference at all. Must just be a difference in the luminance tracking of PQ2084 content between the two.

How do I access this ā€œtv viewā€ in PMP?

It’s in the main Prefrences.

Also it can be activated from the Desktop view:

There’s a funny little icon in the upper right quadrant.
Click that one and your world changes.
You can access the settings there, make your changes and switch back if you like.

Here’s how it all runs at my house:
PMP opens on the TV - 'cause that’s where it’s used… In TV View - so I don’t have to use these:

PlexVisionAid
It does also require the use of my Plex App on my phone to work the thing - I don’t have a Harmony or similar 10’ Remote System.

PfW(hatever) opens on the desktop - when I want to watch something more complex, like an HEVC file that Plexweb will vomit on.

I use Plexweb to create collections and make server changes. Plexweb’s player is total crap 'cause it runs in a crap browser. If you need to see something nice - use a nice player app. PMP is the best.

I found it and I see that it blows everything in the UI up a bit. Nice. Also when playing this file the monitor does not go into HDR mode which means the PMP is doing a conversion in the background of the color gamut to match my display so things don’t look horrible and washed out. It’s probably mapping the HDR to SDR and the BT2020 to Rec709. Looks good but I think I’ll stick with critical watching on my HDR TV.

I don’t want to move my PMP over here on the desktop just now, but if you look in those TV View settings you may find an adjustment.

I have no idea what PMP does behind the scenes.
It direct plays everything I throw at it and it looks great.
That’s pretty much where my interests about it’s guts end…lol

If you get great service out of the TV - that’s what you should use.
If you ever run into a file that misbehaves - chances are PMP will take it over the finish line.

Right tool for the job kinda thing… you got all 3 now - pick the best one.

Yea it’s definitely not throwing HDR to my monitor or the monitor would click over to those modes. Its mapping out HDR to SDR and converting BT2020 to Rec709. It’s nice that the player does this for you automatically when receiving HDR content on a device like the Mac Mini which will not send HDR to my monitor.

I could hook my Nvidia shield TV directly up HDMI to my monitor and run plex HDR content to see what that ends up looking like, but Its really not of huge importance to me since 99.99% of my movie viewing is on my TV.

If you say so…lol

Someone more learned may jump in to offer more info - I seem to have done all the damage here I can do…

Have a great one
