I’m running Plex 1.41.0.8994-f2c27da23 under Win 10, everything up to date.
Last four Plex updates have always ended up with a “404 not found” error when trying to open Plex in Firefox (also most recent version, but not relevant). After searching for solutions to this problem, I’ve found that in C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex Media Server\Resources there should be a directory called Plug-ins-f2c27da23.
Every update moved this folder to C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex Media Server, beside Resources instead of within it, and every time I had to manually move it back in order to get rid of the 4040 error.
I think maybe it’s high time you fixed this, since it’s obviously a newly introduced bug, clearly related to the Plex updates.
That’s brilliant! Many, many thanks! I agree totally with your comments and think that it’s pretty crap that the updates are doing this. I certainly would not have spotted it. One point: my directory is called Plug-ins-af5***** but that doesn’t detract from your solution which works perfectly.
Glad it helped you. Not my solution (can’t remember where I found it) and the alphanumerical are probably different for every PC.
They still haven’t fixed said crap, I believe it’s the sixth update that still does this…
Can you please share your PMS Logs?
Something else you could do is uninstall PMS, navigate to the install location you have listed above and make sure everything is removed. If there are any lingering folders/files remove them. Reinstall and please report back if the issue continues after a “fresh” install.
Uninstalling does not touch your PMS localappdata or media files.

Here are the files you asked for. Hope you get them, attaching a file in this forum is well-hidden .
Is the solution you suggest permanent, meaning if I do a fresh install the problem should dissapear?
I know that we’ve seen this issue before and it should be fixed. I’m hoping that a “fresh” install should resolve it for you.
Sorry, “hoping” is not good enough. I’ve read about this solution and it’s not guaranteed to work. As long as the workaround I’m using still works, I’ll stick with it. The problem lies with the installation, so that should be the target of a permanent fix. So please let me know what those logs tell you.
And thank you for replying.
The logs tell me that you should do a fresh install. We have seen this issue before and a fresh install has fixed the issue for another user.
A warning: when you do the uninstallation, do NOT use certain 3rd-party tools like “uninstallers” or “registry cleaners”. Doing so would cause you to lose your libraries.
OK, will try it soon enough and report back. And no, I never use 3rd party tools for uninstall, but thanks for the warning .
It’s December and this exact issue is still occurring. Never use third party anything, don’t do anything weird. Plex was working, installed latest update and then every attempt to access the server ended in 404.
Used Windows uninstaller to uninstall, re-installed a fully clean latest Plex Media Server instance, same error. Used the Plex uninstaller exe from the Plex Media Server directory and repeated. Same error.
Copied/pasted Plug-ins-bc7397402 directory into Resources instead of beside it at the top level, viola. It works again.
Thank you, Cris, for the workaround!
I wanted to wait for a new update to be sure, but here it goes now.
I have Plex 1.41.3.9292 on Win 10. After the last update, everything worked as it was supposed to work, folder was where it was meant to be, no more 404 error. I haven’t uninstalled anything or repaired installation, the update simply did its job. So yes, it was a problem with the installer/update, not with my installation.
Not holding my breath though, until another update *fingers crossed. Meanwhile cut/paste works .
I been using plex for many years and had never really had a problem But I just had the same problem after the previous update. uninstalled and removed all files and folders and regkeys from my system. Only thing that worked was moving files. to get plex to launch. Just updated in the most recent update and it did it again.
And now certain movies won’t play on my Roku. looking at the log files its saying drv_file.ini is missing. And tried manually searching for the file and it isn’t there. and certain folders are missing that the path is looking to locate that file.
Instead of the C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex Media Server\Resources\Tuner\Private\devices\dvb\file\drv_file.ini
I get C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex Media Server\Resources\Tuner\Private\devices\bda(random files)
I have hidden folders turned off. and even tried manually typing the folder with no luck
Last update, 404 error again.
Maybe fix your installer - just a thought. Otherwise, no comments.
