4K h265 stutters in pmp, not in vlc

I’m trying to play some 4K h265 files in plex media player and they stutter. I try the same files in VLC and they play fine, so I know it’s not my Mac mini (one of the new 2018 ones)

Do I have a setting set wrong somewhere? I have plex media player set to play local content at “original” resolution. Is there something else?

Is it also the Server?

VLC has h265 codecs, Plex only has what the OS provides, lacking 265 it will cpu transcode to 264 which will be resource intensive.

Yes it is also the server. And that makes sense, It seemed like it was downgrading or whatever. So can I just install h265 codec to fix the problem?

I’m not that knowledgeable on Mac OS, but you have a plex pass so you should be able to turn on HW transcoding and if the VideoToolBox is installed it should use the iGPU of the Intel CPU.

I have a similar issue. Plex server on a Synology 918+ playing via Plex client on my NVIDIA shield. H265 files fail to play properly most of the time whilst VLC on the shield plays them all fine. I have a lifetime Plex pass, believe I’ve got the settings correct, (any settings help here would be great). Really not happy that after paying for a Plex pass free VLC works a lot better. What’s up with that?
PS don’t use Plex server on Shield as it’s just not reliable enough, Synology version has been rock solid.
