4K/Lossless Playback Stuttering After Recent Upgrade

Server Version#: 1.24.5.5173
Player Version#:

I’ll start by saying I’ve been using PMS for many many years. Started on a Windows desktop and have been working on a Debian desktop for several years now. Not many major problems in the past, but after upgrading PMS recently, I noticed this issue.

I have direct streamed 4K/TrueHD files in the past with no issues, but when playing a certain one for the first time to an Nvidia Shield, I noticed certain scenes where playback would start to buffer and/or stutter. Sometimes it would say the connection is not fast enough. I have an enterprise-grade network, but I wanted to rule it out anyway.

When the Shield is playing, the activity shows Direct Stream for both audio and video. CPU is reasonable and disk I/O is minimal. I then decided to test with the local web player on the desktop machine. It attempted to transcode to 1080/AAC, and I saw stuttering/buffering in the same spots as before.

I thought it could be a bad HDD or file, so I played the same file locally in SMPlayer, and it plays 100% without issue, which I believe only points to Plex as the cause, I’m just not sure why. Has anyone else experienced this with the latest version? Any help is appreciated. TIA!

The problem is the web player. It isn’t a great way to do it. Audio and video will both need to be transcoded. And if it is HDR, you will have lots of issues. Always use the dedicated players.

It wasn’t just the web player, it was also the Nvidia Shield with the same issues at the same scenes in the movie and using Direct Play…

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. Don’t use the web player to check anything. Any Plex app is better than the web player.

Do you have XML info on the movie you are playing? Investigate Media Information and Formats | Plex Support

Also, how is the shield connected? Do you use the Plex Dash app to monitor things? It helps me a lot. Any chance you have subtitles going?
