Thanks for the info, will this fix still retain HDR or is it only the buffer issue that is fixed, i know they were kind of inter tangled.
They were connected in that one led to the other. The buffer loop was caused by trying to keep HDR by copying the HEVC stream instead of transcoding it. But building a different video stack and allow the HEVC to copy will keep the HDR intact while avoiding the buffer issue.
If you are transcoding the video you will always lose HDR because the transcoded stream switches to h264 which does not support the HDR format.
**Short answer: This fix will allow the HDR to stay.
@jmckee Will the HDR still be preserved if the audio is transcoded? Iām hoping the audio transcoding doesnāt force the video to transcode.
And why is it transcoding to h264 rather than h265? Is h265 still too new?
As long as the HEVC is direct streaming the HDR will be preserved.
I myself do not know the exact reasons h264 but my guess would be:
-
Compatibility: Almost every single modern device will have an h264 decoder that allows h264 play either direct streamed or transcoded. HEVC is still in that stage where now it is pretty common to have a decoder for it, but it canāt always handle being inside of a remuxed stream.
-
Processing power: A fair number servers will be able to transcode 1080p and pretty safely, but a lot of others will run into speed issues when it comes to 4K HEVC files.
Those are just my assumption on why hevc isnāt the default transcode target.
@jmckee Ok, thanks. I guess Iāll just have to try it out when the fix comes. Iāve always had to transcode video anyways because of random green/pink jagged lines on direct play, and audio (5.1, dolby atmos, etc) is never direct playable either. Any chance we could get a transcode that supports 4k with HDR? I just upgraded my CPU to handle the 4k transcode. Now Iām feeling like I just threw money down the toilet if the transcode strips out the HDR anyways.
Amazing for the update,
I can not wait until we get to get our hands on the new plex client
i can feel the 4k COMING
o0o finally.
HEVC encoding is just too taxing on the server unless you have hardware accelerated encoding.
@Moussa sounds like a great update. Now we just need you guys to enable audio passthrough, I donāt want to buy an Nvidia shield.
Not to sound ungrateful but is there a eta on the update?
It was submitted yesterday, hopefully out of cert and published later today.
Anyone has the luck getting the new update and testing it?
The v2.17.1 update should be now rolling out to users, which includes possible performance improvements for streaming 4K media. Please give it a try and let me know if it helps!
Wonderful. Thanks so much! Been waiting for a possible fix for 6 months.
Just tried it on my xb1-s, and still happening
richarddc79, can you verify that you are version 2.17.1?
Just tried it too. It works better on some Movie but not for all :-/ Still transcoding some HEVC to H264
Version verified 2.17.1
Yes, I had to uninstall and reinstall as it wasnāt updating, I will provide logs, (once I have figured out how to!!!).
Just updated mine to 2.17.1 and a few are working but others still a problem and transcoding HEVC to H264
Thanks for the feedback all. Could you please enable logging within the app and then post some logs of playback attempts for the problematic media so we can investigate further.
