Hi,
I have a 4K sample file for a film, which I am trying to playback to test my new CPU capabilities.
The 720p version of the film plays back correctly, but when using “Play Version” to try and play the 4K sample, it sits at the loading icon for about a minute, then just chucks me back to the library with no errors.
Not sure which log I should be looking into, and what kind of messages or events I should be looking for, to diagnose the issue?
I’m guessing first port of call should be the transcoder log? As it doesn’t report a crash, I am not sure if I am looking for errors in the log, or just general messages?
Interesting. I’m sure I got it to play in the browser (albeit with horrendous buffering) on my old under powered CPU ages ago.
Just tried in PMP and it works fine.
Only downside is, that PMP doesn’t seem to support GSync by the looks of it, so when it is my active window, I am not getting my 165Hz refresh rate on the monitor.
Given my lack of 4K content, I’ll stick with the browser, and move over to PMP when the time comes
Thanks for the advice.
Is that hardware decoding? If so, put PMP in TV mode, follow the first step in this support article and then navigate to the Video settings and check the Hardware Decoding setting.
I think once that’s set/verified, you can go back to browser mode and it should play better. (I think I have that right)
@Eds89 Browsers do not support 4K video. Also, they are very limited in their audio support. Playing 4K video in Plex Web will result in video transcoding. PMS transcodes all 4K HEVC content to H264 1080p or lower. All HDR info will be lost, and the video may look washed out, as PMS does not yet support HDR to SDR tonemapping.
Plex Media Player is built using mpv. It will direct play many more formats than Plex Web. As @darcilicious mentions, try the Hardware Decoding option. It might help with GSync (I don’t have a GSync monitor, so cannot say if it will help).
Seems PMP does work with GSync. You need to a) be in TV Mode; b) run Full Screen, not windowed (Main -> Full Screen); c) enable Video -> Hardware Decoding; d) enable Video -> Allow Display Mode Switching.
