My setup is TV samsung UE55HU8500 (latest plex client @orca ) and latest Plex Server on a Synology NAS.
I only get 4k remux mkv files so the streams are as in the BluRays.
The issue is: Every 4K content is just buffering between 3 to 20 sec and sometimes it hangs.
Some info:
TV is wired, I’ve downloaded from plex with my laptop connected to the same cable the movie I’m trying to play with a steady 80MB/s
I’ve reset the TV to factory settings and reinstalled plex client
Some years ago I was able to play 4k without a problem but sometimes in the past with plex server/client , TV updated it stopped working properly
Even 4k samples from Samsung, Sony are not playing properly anymore
The equivalent of Plex from Synology is Video Station which is playing fine the 4k content. It also has an “Cast” option what makes the TV play the movie using DLNA which is playing fine.
Playing a 4k sample from USB is playing fine
I’ve tried changing the plex client settings for buffers but did not help
I only play with Direct Play so no transcoding
I’ve tried with different audio track ( not HD )
I really like Plex so any suggestions are welcomed.
Its it Megabytes or Megabits. Because 100 Mbps which the TV is rated for is only 12.5 Megabytes per second. 8 Bits per byte. 1000 Mbps would be 125 Megabytes a second.
@theo.nicolau probably meant he was getting 80MB/s from his laptop copying the file from the Plex server.
@Donut417 Your calculation is a rough estimate as a Gigabit ethernet connection without accounting for overhead should be calculated as:
((10^9/8)/2^20)=119.209289551 Megabytes
4K UHD BD maximum bitrate specifications are 128Mbps. The FastEthernet port in that Samsung will not suffice. You will be better off using the 802.11ac WiFi connection as long as your network supports it and the signal strength is strong.
80MBytes I get using the laptop (so cable/signal is good)
when playing on TV 4k goes up to 8-12MB but when the image hangs a bit the traffic goes down as well… playing 1080p content the traffic is steady (not sure how much)
plex is showing Direct Play for both video and audio (tried different audio stream as well)
I have an wifi extender 1m from the TV which has 1GB uplink to the router. Connecting the TV to the 5G of the router it doesn’t change anything.
Same content is playing fine from USB or from VideoStation or from DLNA client (DLNA server on VideoStation, I will test with the DLNA server from plex)
yes, that’s a good point but I’m using only unsecured connections… on the plex server is set to Disabled and on the client the secure connection is unchecked.
well, I’ve changed from wired to wifi 5G and it plays a lot better but not without rare interruptions.
I’ve also did some other changes, not sure if it helped or not:
I’ve added my LAN network to LAN settings
the name of my plex server was using an old DNS name: plex.blabla.xxx … changed it to the domain I’m using now ( I have a local DNS server )
Still, why VideoStation is playing fine, why DLNA client is playing fine…
Maybe they are skipping some frames to compensate for network issues…
One other thing that I’ve noticed is that now, using wifi, the traffic (from router) looks continuously.
Strange… but when playing same content using VideoStation app on the TV the traffic is a bit lower, around 10000kB/s lower
