In the past I have not had any problems playing 4K files from my Plex server on the LG TV built in media player via DLNA. All the files, 4K, 1080p, 720p, 1080i are in the .mkv format.
I first noticed the problem when I setup a new LG 4K Tv in the bedroom. I was testing the LG player, lesser formats play fine but 4K came up with, “This file can not be recognized. Do you want to play the next file?” I thought that was strange because the files had always played fine on the 65" LG in the Living Room. I went to it and got the same error message. Once again lesser rez .mkv files play as expected, 4K no.
Is there some sort of setting that I can check on the Plex server that might be interfering with the 4K file recognization? I’ve also have another DLNA setup on a Terra Master NAS server. I dragged a 4K file over to it and it played as expected via the LG media player. So it seems to be a file recognization problem with the Plex server not the LG built in media player.
Sorry, I guess I had the web client version. I was clicking around trying to find a version number and that one popped up. I’ve corrected the version to 1.18.3.2156 which is up to date for the Mac server.
I just moved a 4K file into a video library folder and it is playing. I have been moving folders and libraries over to the NAS drive. The 4K movies/scenery files had been in a 4K folder within my Movie library which played just fine. I’ve moved all but the 4K files to a new movie folder on the NAS Drive. Renamed the old folder 4K and kept it on the computer thinking that 4k would play better off the computer rather than the NAS Drive.
Again, I moved a short scenery file to the NAS drive to a “Other Video” folder/library, it plays. All the others are on the computer in a “Movie” folder/library and it doesn’t recognize the file. Could the library type be causing this? It doesn’t look like you can edit the library type for me to do a simple check. When all the movies were in the folder the 4K worked fine.
I may move the whole Plex server off my computer to the NAS drive. It has a Plex server app. I was worried about the speed of the NAS drive but so far so good.
