720p and SD content on 1080p screens

Hi,

Bit of a general question:

if I play 720p/SD content on OpenPHT, does a typical 1080p TV know it is getting low-resolution content that needs to be upscaled, when OpenPHT is running in 1920x1080x60p or does it just assume that HDMI resolution = content resolution and thus assume that it is getting FullHD content?

Does this mean that I should be getting OpenPHT (actually Rasplex) to output the native resolution of the content so that the TV can do the upscaling? Or is the upscaling being done by OpenPHT as good as what a TV would be doing?

Unless you have a very very expensive TV the upscaling that OpenPHT provides will be far superior to the upscaling that the TV would do. Especially true if you modify the OpenPHT settings to use one of the better scalers like lanczos 3.

And otherwise, if I have a very very expensive TV :stuck_out_tongue: - How can I let my TV do the upscaling of SD/720p content?
