The Plex app on my CCwGTV updated, and now I can no longer change the size of ASS/SSA subtitles, even with “override subtitle styling” being enabled, all these subtitles are now massive, while I prefer them as “tiny”, downloading SRT subtitles alongside content that has embedded ASS/SSA subtitles is also broken, as styling options don’t affect the SRT subtitle (although the content of the subtitles does change, so it does use the subtitles correctly, it just won’t style them), content with nothing but SRT subtitles still works as expected.
Please resolve this quickly because this makes content unenjoyable when up to 40% of the screen is taken by subtitles, I now need to use Plex through Kodi once again to workaround subtitle issues, the VOBSUB index issue I reported here Wrong external subtitle language played - #6 by DorCoMaNdO is also still present although it affects a handful of items in my library while ASS/SSA affects almost all of it.
I can provide access to my library if it would help, I’m not really sure how to crop an existing file without losing the embedded subtitles, but this should be reproducible on any media with embedded ASS/SSA, the issue with SRT I’ve tested with subtitles downloaded via the Plex interface but I’m sure it’d also apply to “external” subtitles (files alongside the media) and perhaps embedded SRT too, I just don’t download “external” SRT subtitles when embedded ASS/SSA is available because it tends to have better synchronization, and with “override subtitle styling” enabled, until this update, they’d look and function exactly the same.
Yes the last line in the post you linked is the same issue, however I’m also reporting that the issue causes SRT subtitles to be unaffected by styling too, as long as there’s ASS/SSA subtitles for the same media (my test case only involves embedded ASS though, not sure about external).
Feel free to share your library with me if that’s easier for you, if you let me know the video it’s happening on I can take a look. Could you provide a screenshot as well as I’m a bit confused on what the issue is?
At the moment, override subtitle styles doesn’t work for the new ASS/SSA subtitle support, is that the issue you are experiencing? The ASS/SSA subtitles should be formatted by the subtitle file / stream.
The other issue sounds like external SRT subtitles can’t have their sizing changed via the app?

The former causes the latter, if both exist for the same media.
Also I would rather disable “ASS/SSA subtitle support” for the sake of being able to resize the subtitles, because until then I’m forced to download SRT subtitles (assuming the SRT issue is fixed, or use Kodi in the meantime) for almost all of my media despite having ASS subtitles that were previously perfectly usable, now they’re not because they simply take too much space because the default “normal” size is simply huge, given the option I’d even go smaller than “tiny” but it’s far less disruptive at that size, I use subtitles as a more sub-concious thing, I’m not a native English speaker but I understand and speak it quite well, however there are words or names that are sometimes difficult to make sense of, a slight glance at the bottom of the screen makes it far easier to understand.

I sent a request to your username, I’m assuming that matches since it’s got the same profile picture, I’ll send a private message with media that reproduces the issue
If you change the Subtitle Burning option in the settings to “Always” that will result in ASS subs working as they did in the earlier versions of the app, but it also means SRT, VOB, and PGS subs will also be transcoded now. There isn’t a setting specific to ASS at this time.
I found that subtitle burn-in prevented styling from working too (although the default font size tends to be smaller), alongside decreasing image quality significantly (most of my content is H265, re-encoding to H264 with burn-in yields terrible loss of quality), increased server load, I also don’t think it’s accurate that it will “result ASS subs working as they did in earlier” because it played directly before.
Seems like the behavior changed a bit, it doesn’t re-encode the image, and the font is smaller, but the font is also quite terrible, I like the player’s font better, I also don’t think “override subtitle styling” takes any effect with burn-in (or at least it used not to), which sometimes results wildly different experiences with subtitles, with different font sizes, colors, etc from one episode to the next.
Again it’s just an episode (FBI season 3 episode 12) with embedded ASS, downloading any SRT subtitles through the player renders styling settings for both subtitles ineffective (burn-in disabled, override subtitle styling enabled).
Small side note, the order of subtitle results (when downloading subtitles via the player) seems to be based on score, but when it comes to a show like FBI that often causes subtitles for the spin off series FBI Most Wanted to appear first, it’d be nice if there was a way to make it prefer more accurate matches to the series name.
