Problem with the size of the subtitles (ASS)

Changing the size of the subtitles also affects those with style, such as ASS when are transcoded.

I set subtitles size to large, but I don’t want that this affects the subtitles that already have their own style (like ASS), so I have to change the configuration every time I want to see one thing or another.

This can be easily solved by adding a new option like this:

  • Overwrite subtitle styles: Yes / No

Server Version#: Latest
Player Version#: Latest

The subtitle settings should not affect ASS subs when they are transcoded. I just tested and the size doesn’t change for me. Can you provide details and screenshots if you can reproduce?

Player: Nvidia Shield

Normal:

Large:

And that’s ASS? Can you provide me the XML?

Private sended

Check the app settings for the “burn subtitles” option. If this is set to “image only” then PMS will convert the ASS to plain text which will then be affected by the size setting. Leave the setting on “automatic” which should then burn them in with the video and won’t be affected.

It’s on automatic, it’s transcoding as shown in the screenshots

It’s transcoding the video, not necessarily the subtitles. I wonder if “automatic” doesn’t cause the subs to burn in now. There was a change to the app that burning in subtitles is not always necessary now.

Let me do some more testing. I couldn’t reproduce this earlier in a quick test.

The cause of the transcoding are the subtitles and this occurs from always (since subtitles options were included) not by the recent changes

It use to be “always”. This changed with 8.0.0. It could be burning in the subtitles, but it’s not guaranteed that is is anymore. Would need to see logs to see whats going on.

The problem persists…

Server: 1.19.5.3112 (Official Docker, clean install)
Player: Lastest version of official App @ Nvidia Shield

Some recap:

  1. Clean install for server (official docker image) and App
  2. Subtitles are on automatic
  3. Video are transcoded in order to maintain appearance of the subtitles (ass) but are affected by size of subtitles in settings (not desired behavior)
  4. Subtitles are burned in transcoding
  5. If I disable subtitles there are not transcoding at all

Could somebody check this appart of @anon18523487? @BigWheel?

Thanks

this option already exists. in the main app settings. it can’t be changed during playback

@BigWheel, yes, I found that, but doesn’t work. Same result with it on and off.
