A light weight browse only server / metadata only server

My User Story

I have a media collection on a server over USB disk drives. & internal spinning disks. I have lost more than a few drives that I attribute to heat. To extend the life of my devices, I have decided to keep the media server off linux: pm-suspend So, I cannot browse the media library unless I switch it on. I would like to have a 24/7 online media metadata server on raspberry pi. All I want this to do is serve metadata enough to browse the library and not play anything at all, but just point [which] server is off and optionally execute a script of sending the server a magic packet to wake it up.

So, I would like a metadata mirroring server for Plex or a meta data aggregating server for multiple server something light enough for a SBC like Raspberry pi to handle.

I cannot actually comment on the original issue… seems asking for a completely new app type for Plex to overcome some heat issue might not be the easiest answer to actually solving a heat issue (from the top of my head: better cooling, separating storage from server, e.g. using a NAS/DAS for the disks).

As for your suggestion: I believe there’s a number of suggestions that had been looking at that from different angles. None of them has gotten much attention over the years – titles can be misleading though
