I run a fairly old Western Digital My Cloud Mirror NAS. It is absolutely fit for purpose, but I think it is just out of the running as a viable option for PLEX. I understand that it cannot Transcode Videos as the processor is too low powered, but it is even very unstable to run Plex on it (only PLEX - everything else is absolutely fine!).
What I would like to suggest is that PLEX has a “light” mode, or a stripped down version for use on these type of boxes. I travel alot, and just want a stripped down version which will be able to record programs for me, and file them in my PLEX media library for me to pick up wherever I am in the world. I will access the recorded files on a separate PC (or a higher powered NAS installed elsewhere) to actually transcode/watch the recorded files.
I am hoping that many people, like me, just want a budget system in our home country, as a cost effective way to record programs from home which we can pick in whichever country we happen to be living
Al alternative would be to bring DVR to PLEX Cloud!!
Sounds like you’d be more served by a small pc server instead. I picked up a used Mac Mini from 2014 and it works great for all you’re wanting to do. HP has some small form factor PC’s that would work great as well. I’ve got a Seagate Personal Cloud that I also use for DVR. It can transcode the recorded files to Plex clients but seems very fragile in comparison to the Mini. I was hoping it was up to the task of doing all the DVR stuff I’ve got going but it just isn’t.
Thanks Chris - yes I was considering the same - but if Plex could get a cut down and stable version on a lower spec NAS it would be much easier to manage remotely (and save the few hundred pounds for the extra PC Server). I am planning a full spec system in another country to actually watch the media, but I am just looking for the lowest footprint solution to leave in my parents house back home in the UK to record my UK TV Favourites. I think this would be a killer solution for the millions of us who live elsewhere but just want to amass our favourite TV shows from home.
