Any ninjas know if the following is a Samsung, Synology of Plex issue?

20 DVD’s ripped using Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate software using the default settings: MP4 > h.264 > AAC audio codec (exact same settings on both machines as follows). I ripped 10 on a Dell XPS Laptop (W8.1, i7, 16GB, SSD, 8 cores) and 10 on a HTPC (W8.1, i3, 16GB, SDD, 4 cores). All media is stored on a Synology NAS with up to date DSM software.

The 10 DVDs ripped on the PC play on all 3 Samsung Smart TV’s on my network (UE46F6400, UE22F5410, UE22H5610) via DLNA, Plex, Samsung Smart Link/Smart View, Synology VideoStation, USB pen drive. But the 10 ripped on the laptop will only play on the Samsung UE22H5610 TV. This is 12 months newer and has a different Samsung Smart Hub software than the other 2 TV’s. 6.1701 vs. 5.3221 on the 2 older models.

Logic would suggest it’s a Samsung issue but to throw a spanner in the works, 2 of the 10 ripped on the laptop will play via a USB pen drive “eventually”. At first they gave an “Video Data Not Supported” message but if left for 10-20 seconds they play.

I have contacted Samsung but as any Samsung customers will know, their support is abysmal. I expect a canned response from them soon.

Also, what is the recommended software and settings to rip DVD’s so they play across the board.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks a lot

I use MakeMKV to rip (I use it on DVD’s as well as Blu Ray). I have used Handbrake to transcode most of my media - settings are pretty much the same as found in Cayars Script, which I use now - most of the time.

Thanks for your response. Nobody helped with the core of the enquiry so it still exists, Samsung support is abysmal/inept and Aimersoft never even responded.

To be able to discern the differences in your files, one needs technical data about them.
Please provide the mediainfo XML of one of the playable files and one of the files with issues.

Another method would be to export the advanced mediainfo in textformat.
this software here https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
File - Export - Text (Advanced mode)
(Careful: the installer of this software carries some piggybacking crapware. Decline the offer to install it!)

Thanks, I’ll give it a go and report back, time permitting.

Info as requested. Appreciate the help in identifying the problem.

Judging by these mediainfos, the files appear to have identical codec parameters.
So no clues can be drawn from there.

I don’t know this Aimersoft software you are using to convert the videos, so here is my theory:
Does this software try to use hardware acceleration to speed up encoding?
Maybe the laptop has the appropriate hardware for it, whereas your PC has not.
It wouldn’t be the first time that this hardware accelerated video encoding introduces ‘issues’ into the video stream.
The only tip I have for you is to use a different software for encoding a try how the Samsungs cope with that.

btw: don’t use square brackets [ ] to enclose the release year in your file names. Use normal, round ones ( ) instead.
The plex video scanners are supposed to ignore everything in square brackets, so the year within can’t help with the proper matching.

D’oh! I did everything with square brackets. Which software do you recommend to Rip DVD’s and should I be using MP4 or MKV - which format has longevity?

And probably best I test it after one DVD to ensure it works, before ripping a lot like I did.

Thanks for your help.

Many around here use a 2-stage process with makemkv to rip and Handbrake to compress.

Definitely.

I totally agree with @OttoKerner

Thanks to all for your help, input and advice.
