I had posted a week or so ago because I could not get remote access to stay green. I thought I had it figured out, but the people with whom I’m sharing keep telling me they don’t have access. So I go to my Plex settings and sure enough it says “not available outside your Network.”
So I reboot my router and get it working, but the next day it’s “red” again but rebooting the router doesn’t work. I finally got it to work by rebooting everything: computer, router, microwave oven, everything.
Can anybody tell me what causes this to be so intermittent?
Try going through everything covered here https://forums.plex.tv/t/the-basics-of-remote-access-troubleshooting/769517
Thanks for your response.
I have seen that article before, but I did reread it, and feel that it might be my VPN.
My VPN (PIA) had a split tunnel feature that stopped working with macOS Monterey.
Regarding the “VPN helper tools” (see attached), it doesn’t go into a lot of detail.
So I guess my question would be: What are the VPN helpers tools, and where do I get them?
Can you please upload a zip file of the logs from your microwave
I’m not sure if this is what you’re looking for
Honestly, I hope not because it looks like a nightmare lol
PIA says they’re working on a solution…but no ETA
4 months later….uh huh
I’m not sure if this would work for you but if it were me, I would consider installing the PIA browser extension until they come up with a fix. I know they have addons for Firefox and Chrome
That would keep most of your activity behind a vpn while leaving Plex open to your regular ip
PIA does have a help page where they say you can “reach out” for help and alternate solutions until they fix it
https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com/news/posts/split-tunneling-on-monterey
I’m thinking about a few of the things you said though
When my vpn is on without split tunneling enabled people can still access my server outside the network, it’s just on a relay with an indirect connection
.
And rebooting your devices shouldn’t enable a direct connection if your vpn starts with the computer
I’m just trying to think how this could be an intermittent problem. I’m assuming your vpn is on most of the time?
Thanks, Jay…

LOL!
So if I use the browser extension, the VPN only blocks the IP when I’m using the browser, correct? That might be a reasonable solution for the time being.
Hi again,
Oddly enough I already had that PIA extension installed on chrome for some reason. So this is great! I can just download all my nefarious crap on Chrome and let it go at that. Without the desktop PIA app Open the remote access on my Plex works fine. Fingers crossed…
Thanks again. I’ll work on getting those log files for the oven…
Hey everybody, thanks for all your help.
Just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water!
I had been able to bypass the PIA Application by using the PIA Chrome extension when browsing, however when I use my Vuze bit torrent client, I have no VPN protection. So I guess I’m back at square one.
I watched a video about setting up SOCKS5 proxy with the Vuze application. However, I can’t seem to determine whether I need to have the PIA application running as well as the SOCKS5 proxy. I know this is not a Plex thing, but if anybody has any information, I would be quite grateful.
Rest assured, I am doing everything I can to research this on my own, but I wanna give you guys a heads up because you might have a solution.
Thanks again.
