(edited from original post) A very pleasant person pointed out that there are questions and answers to my question I posted. Which I did see and it didn’t work when I tried some. If it is not clear I am not to smartest computer person, hence why I asked for help. But thank you Forkboyink for pointing all that out to me. If anyone else has the time/patience to respond to my question I would really appreciate it. It was pointed out I was missing information needed I can provide that but again I’m not the smartest person so layman language would be awesome.
I have the Plex App on my phone to watch my videos while I am away from home but I can’t get it to work while my VPN in on. Is there away around this?
There are literally dozens of post in these forums about VPN’s and not working outside of your network (and many proposed solutions) did you do a search?
Also a little more info would help like VPN service? Are you running it on your PMS or on your device? Is it router based VPN?
Well gosh @Eyasumoto I apologize if I came off sounding anything more than helpful to you, but when you ask a question, with little in the way of details in order to help you, all I can do is point you in a direction that, since only you know the details to your situation (ie: type of VPN service you’re using, on device/server/both) you’d be better off finding an answer rather than guessing and telling you the wrong thing.
I would not dare assume your intelligence level or computer savvy, also since you have a couple of pieces of software that takes a bit of (what I would call computer) tinkering to setup and use (ie: a VPN and Plex). Most of us have patience and a willingness to help figure something out if we have all the information and the person asking for assistance seems to be genuinely stuck in figuring out a problem and not just looking for the quickest way to get someone else to do it for them.
Again sorry if I offended you, I will make sure I will stay out of your posts from now on.
No offense here! I was feeling more like I offended the Plex community with my question since you (Forboylnk) pointed out other conversations, and then asked if I had done a search. Which in your latest response only pointed out my feeling are correct about your first response to me (not pleasant). I am not trying to have anyone do the work for me. Sorry for “AGAIN” not being as smart as you when it comes to computers and all the technical stuff that goes into them. I thought this was a place to ask questions and not be accused of basically being lazy. I do apologize to the Plex community for not knowing all the information off the bat I needed to know in order to make the Plex community believe I do need help. I will not post stupid questions anymore. Sorry Forkboylnk (see I don’t even know you are suppose to put the @ before Forkboylnk like you did to me…lol that is how much I do not know. Just being honest here) Once more have a safe and happy Holiday(s)!
What about this statement gives you the impression that I was attempting to be “unpleasant”? If asking a question is unpleasant, these types of forums would be a huge waste of everyone’s time.
I also …
A) didn’t just ignore your post, but took the time to respond and attempted to gain more information about your situation and problem. By answering the question posed to your question would give anyone more information about what you have or haven’t tried.
B) didn’t just assume your computer competency level by trying to find out more information about how you’re using your VPN.
C) call you lazy, but must have hit a nerve somehow.
and also pointing out how to do something correctly and not knowing it at the same time seems a bit funny to me
I was already in this post, but will be sure to give your self-flagellating future posts a wide berth from here on out.
Sorry your minimalist informational post has made you feel that the whole of Plex Human Kindness has failed you and as your belief that I, in an attempt to assist, has shamed the entire Plex community . Good day and best of luck!
The thing about written communication is that it is hard to assess the tone of the writer’s message. Or to express tone, for that matter. Unless it’s very obvious that someone is being rude/sarcastic/facetious, it’s probably best to assume that they’re not. I read their message as an attempt to guide and solicit additional information.
You can add your specific VPN service’s name to the search criteria to get (potentially) more specific results. I will say however that, from my reading, remote access through a VPN is hit-or-miss as it requires the ability to forward inbound ports, which not all providers support.
You may also want to go ahead and post the answers to the questions posed above:
Remote Access, With VPN, is mostly troublesome for Network Experts - nearly impossible for everyone else. Truth be told.
I use PIA. Once upon a time it worked fine with PMS (Plex Media Server), now it doesn’t. There is a team at PIA trying to work out the kinks, via a ‘Split Tunnel’ (<—how’s that for jumping right in the deep end?) (<—yea, I have no idea what that really means either).
The idea is to allow Plex to bypass the VPN altogether. Right now it isn’t working, but the team know that and are back at the drawing board.
I operate on the "if the lights aren’t on - check back later’ principle.
Perhaps someday that will change.
We hope.
I will chime in here " Forkboyhlnk" , of recent there has been a solution put forward from PIA with a application Exemption for split tunneling. I can confirm it will work with MacOS but there are roadblocks and workarounds with Windows unfortunately. This may change shortly.
If you for one would like to discuss a MacOS solution , message me for more detail of a application solution.
I understand the hurdles of tunneling with a VPN. I have my VPN running on my router for the whole house and running my PMS through a tunnel. Had to add it to the DHCP also. I have everything set up and no issues with access outside my network.
Appreciate the offer @SE56 but I’m doing ok with my current provider and system. Was just trying to find out more info to help and got called “unpleasant” for asking.
