Access home server from overseas with Samsung Smart TV

Server Version#:1.26.2.5797
Player Version#:

I have just installed a Samsung Smart Tv in Sweden and am trying to access my “home Plex server” in the US using the Samsung Plex app. I am able to log in with my account but am only seeing the streaming options of the Plex services, not the content on my server, such as Tv shows, movies, etc.
I have similar setup at other locations in the US with no problems. When I download the app and initially start I get the message to log in to Link | Plex and after entering the requested code only the streaming option will show.
Am I doing something wrong and how do I get access to my home server?
Thanks for any help!!!

Any way to use a VPN and choose a us based server?
Not sure if that is the correct answer but that would be my first thing to try?

  1. Is the problem only with the Samsung or with all devices?
Can you access your own media using a mobile phone, PC, etc. while in Sweden?

  2. Are the libraries available, just not pinned to the home page?
Choose “More” at the bottom of the list of libraries/services on the left.
Do you see your server & libraries listed?

Thanks for your answer!

  1. Yes its only with the Samsung TV. This is a new TV. I have another Samsung as well that I installed Plex on a couple of years ago and that one is working fine.
I have no problem accessing Plex on my iPad or computer. They are all on the same wifi network.

  2. No, I cannot see my home libraries (they are on my server in CA). When choosing “More” I still only see the Plex streaming libraries.

Thanks for the update.

Are you using the same login on the new Samsung as the other devices? Wondering if it could be a sharing issue. I know you said “log in with my account” in your first post. Just want to verify.

Is the correct account name displayed on the TV after login? A Plex account is not needed to see the free, online streaming content. Looking to verify that the login process worked correctly.

When you click on “More,” do you see your server listed, just unavailable, or is it not listed at all?

Plex working on your iPad & computer at the same location seemingly rules out any networking issues.

If the login/authentication process works correctly, then you should see your server listed when you choose “More.”

Basically, I’m not sure why the Samsung can’t see your server. Trying to rule out the “usual suspects” and narrow things down a bit.

I had a similar issue with Samsung TVs in German…my problem turned out to be that Samsung TV does not enable IPv6 by default…my home server is only reachable via IPv6 as I am behind CGNAT…so I use duckdns as ipv6 DNS… when I tried to connect on remote Samsung TV, I was pulled my hair out till I noticed that Samsung does not enable ipv6 by default…I do not know if you US server is an ipv4 or ipv6 address, but thought that this might help.

Thanks for your good advice!
The problem is now fixed. What I did was to completely start over and verify that it was set to my profile and that all settings were correct. I guess I must have 2 personal profiles and PLEX choose the “wrong one” when I installed the app on the TV…
Now, if I may ask another question?
I moved my “old” Samsung tv that I just replace to another room and started up PLEX, which was running fine before. My correct profile is showing and all my libraries as well.
However, when I try to play something, movie or tv show, I get an error saying. ”Playback error - an unexpected playback problem occurred”. Any ideas?

Is it appropriate to ask this or should I open a new thread?
Thanks again for your help!

@bkjeell

Let’s see if the server log files show anything.

Check that your server is configured for debug, not verbose, logging.
Settings → Server_Name → General (show advanced)

Pick a video that should direct play, and play it on the new TV for ~20 seconds. Just to make sure things work OK.

Now try to play the same video on the old TV. If/when you get the error message, then stop and back out to the library level.

Wait 1 minute for the server to log everything.

Pull the log files (Settings → Troubleshooting) and attach the zip file to the thread.

Can I do this remotely, checking the server status and log? My server is in the US and I am in Sweden now where my TVs are. I am having no problems playing my content on iPad. Will try on my new TV tomorrow.

Yes. Use the web interface, app.plex.tv/desktop. You should be able to see server settings, Plex Dashboard, etc.

I’m not sure why you can’t play something on the old TV. If it works in one room, it should work in the other.

I’m hoping the logs have some additional details on why it is not working.

Streaming from the new TV is just a sanity check that is is possible to stream a specific video at that location from another device. You could stream it from your iPad or other device if that is easier. It shows the video, your server and the network are OK.

Hi again,
so here are the logs (I think the right ones).
I did play the movie on the new TV and it worked fine, same on the iPad. tried again on the old Tv and got the error message again.
I then reset the app on the TV and started from scratch again. I logged in with the 4 digit code and successfully connected to my server and all the content on the server showed up. tried to play the movie again with the same result.
I then logged in the to the server on my computer and downloaded todays and one on yesterdays logs.
I did check that the server was set to debug.
Hope this helps!!
Again, thanks sooo much for your help!

Plex Transcoder Statistics.log (123.7 KB)

One more update……
Just tested to access Plex from the “old” tv again with the same result. Then tried it with using a Firestick adapter and then it worked fine with the Firestick app…
Also tried to remove the app from the TV and reinstall and that did not work either.
Mystery continues……
