Access my Server from Work through firewall using Plex Web

Server Version#: 1.25.7.5604
Player Version#: Plex Web (app.plex.tv)

I’ve done a little searching on the forums but can’t find a good answer on the options for what I would imagine is a common problem.

I get the error “app.plex.tv is unable to connect to “GowansPlex” securely” when trying to use PlexWeb from my work computer.

I can connect using Plex Web on other computers on the Internet, using my phone, etc. So remote access is fine. I highly suspect my corporate firewall just says NO to PlexWeb on my work computer connecting to port 32400 (actually I use a different port but it’s in those same high numbers range)

At work I’d like to listen to music from my plex server. I have no control over my work firewall and cannot install applications on my work computer. I’d like to use “app.plex.tv” (Plex Web) on Chrome on my work computer to connect to my home server.

I don’t know what (if any) ports are open on my work network. This is a big corporation so they probably have a pretty exotic firewall.

I’ve read about NGinx, or using VPN. My corporate firewall blocks VPN plus I can’t install anything. NGinx might be an option, I was hoping something simpler might work

Can I just use port 443 directly as my Plex remote port since that might pass through the corporate firewall? I imagine it might be dumb idea but I’m asking anyway…

I expect it may be completely impossible (e.g. my corporate firewall may block my cable modem’s public IP address/address range entirely, I haven’t even tested that…) but was looking for a comprehensive list of options. I could then explore them myself.

Thanks in advance.

You’ll need to use manual port forwarding, not UPnP.
Map your Plex port to 443.
In your router, port forward external port 443 to internal port 32400.
In Settings → Remote Access, manually specify the port as 443.

Try it from an external location - coffee shop, phone on mobile network (wifi off), etc., to verify it works. Then try from work.

Also, from a PC on the same network as your server, go to canyouseeme.org. Swap the default, port 80, for your remote access port (443) and see if your Plex server is visible.

Using port 443 to access Plex from a hospital:

Hmmm. Now that was easy.

I just changed my router to external port 443, set it like you said in the Plex Server setup to 443.

That was it. Everything works. I used canyouseeme.org, and it gave a thumbs up. I tried it over my iPhone when not on my home wifi. It worked. I tried my work computer. It worked too. I played music, played a movie.

I was seriously thinking someone was going to tell me that it’s crazy to use port 443 as my external port. I imagine though that it’s a commonly scanned port so my final question is - did I do anything to compromise my home network security by switching Plex external port to 443?

If not, sweet! Now I can stream music on my work computer. No more copying songs to my work computer using a burned DVD (they won’t let us plug in a thumb drive)

443 will get scanned more often than 32400, but 32400 is also scanned.

Use strong passwords and keep your firewall up to date.

Some users restrict remote access to specific IP addresses, but that won’t work if you stream to mobile clients.
