Access PMS via Remote URL (instead of plex.tv) in Plex Apps

Server Version#: 1.21.0.3744
Player Version#:Web

Hey guys,
I’m running PMS on a Synology. Some Synology Services. are accessible from the outside, others are only accessible via VPN.

I’d like to make PMS (temporarily when I’m out of home) available publically via Portforwarding.
I do not want to route the traffic through plex.tv.
I already do have my own domain for my NAS.

So from the web it’s no problem to access PMS through https://myDomain:myPort
but I wasn’t able to find any option in the plex android app. So I’m assuming Plex Android App uses plex.tv to access my server.

How can I change this, or is it not recommended to access PMS directly via Portformwarding?

plex.tv is used for user authentication, such as verifying your Plex Pass to unlock the mobile app.

Your media streams from your server directly to your device.

The exception is Plex Relay, which is used if remote access is not working correctly or not available. Plex Relay is enabled by default. You can disable it in Settings → Network.

Monitor a remote stream via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing. If the connection is listed as Remote, then remote access is working correctly. If the connection is listed as Indirect, then the traffic is using Plex Relay and you need to check your remote access configuration.

Hey, thx.for your fast answer

  • A test playback within the android plex app indeed is displayed as indirect playback.
  • A test playback from my computer in Firefox via plex.tv is (obviously) displayed as indirect playback
  • A test playback from my computer in Firefox via mydommain.com:myPlexPort is listed as direct playback

=>so the server properly supports direct playback. (all tests where performed from outside my home network

=>What am I missing, I does not seam to be a server issue but rather an (android) app client issue right?
