I run Plex on my Synology NAS and the content is on it as well. Everything works great intern. But remote access doesn’t work. Also when I VPN into my network it’s working. But i want to reach this from the outside when i’m on vacation. I think it has something to do with my Synology NAS. Do i need to turn on quickconnect?
I get this error when trying to watch on my phone through 4G network.
Don’t use quickconnect… that might even turn out to make things more complicated.
As for setting up your remote access…
Do I read your post correct that you could access your library but it failed playing a video while outside your home network?
Personally I prefer using a manual port forward when it comes to remote access – this removes one of the variables that could cause hiccups.
Have you tried establishing one for your PMS in your router?
Thank you tom, what is PMS and how to apply?
What manual port i should use and do i need to add this in the android app?
Yeah I do see the library and click on the film.
PMS = Plex Media Server – from reading your post, this one is installed on the Synology.
you can pick a public TCP port to your liking – should be something between 20000 and 50000… if you want you can pick one close to the default port used by Plex (e.g. 32400 +/- x)
Remote access configuration has nothing to do with the Android phone. That’s all in your router and the Plex Media Server app
If you can access/see the library while outside your home network, that implies the remote access is actually working.
So you might not need to change any other settings in this area.
Have you maybe disabled the server from transcoding (Settings > [Server Name] > Transcoder > Disable video stream transcoding)? This could cause the video not to be played if it cannot be played as-is (e.g. if you configured your Android Plex app to play videos at a lower bitrate/quality when connected remotely or if this is a format the Android player cannot deal with).
Thank you, port forwarding is working, but not related to this problem i figured out.
When i go to the web URL it works on the phone and can watch a movie. But when i use the App its not working from the outside. When i turn of WiFi, the same movie IS working. So it’s App+outside related. On another phone i dont error but its keep buffering with 4G, but works on WiFi, maybe is has to do with the streaming settings. Because when watching on WiFi quality is original, when i change to “convert to anything less” it also comes in buffermode. When switch back to original it starts again.
Ok, yeah that sounds reasonable. I have a ds215j, which is pretty old. Would a normal ds218 do the job. Cause I’m planning on updating or a ds218+. I prefer the ds218 pricewise.
