A quick question, does PlexConnect still not work when using an AppleTV that is not on the local network? From my understanding it seems like it does not of what I have read. I just want some confirmation.
If you have a Jailbroken aTV 2 you can install plexconnect on it and it will work anywhere you have an internet connection. If you want content you will need to sign into myplex if in a remote location. If you have a pms host with you, your jb aTV 2 will detect the pms server and provide you content locally or remotely.
If it’s unjailbroken you will need a plexconnect host with you locally or remotely in order for plexconnect to work. You will need a pms server or you will need to sign into myplex to provide plexconnect content.
There are other methods but these are the most common scenarios.
So, I have an AppleTV 3rd Generation. So I can sign into myPlex and it will get my content from my remote PMS?
If your remote pms is signed in properly to myplex yes.
Cool! Looks like I'm sitting down and doing that as soon as possible. Thanks!
Question, do I setup the PlexConnect on my PMS remote server?
If it’s unjailbroken you will need a plexconnect host with you locally or remotely in order for plexconnect to work. You will need a pms server or you will need to sign into myplex to provide plexconnect content.
Basically in normal occurrences you will need a plexconnect host with you if you are in a remote location or locally. So if if you are taking your aTV with you somewhere (remote location) you need a plexconnect host for the appletv to function. When you sign into myplex on the appletv plexconnect routes back to your home pms server via myplex.
If you are just using plexconnect locally you can install plexconnect and pms on the same host.
