Add a HDHR3-US to Plex DVR is possible now

Not sure if anyone has come across Silicon Dust’s latest firmware change log but it looks promising for those of us running a HDHR3-US (the older 2 tuner OTA model).

Here is a link:silicondust.com/support/downloads/firmware-changelog/

It states:
Legacy models: Add support for DeviceAuth and discover.json APIs required for live TV in the latest HDHomeRun VIEW apps.

Which I believe was the reason the tuner was incompatible in the first place.

Will we be seeing the ability to add these tuners in the future beta 4 update?

I have one of these tuners as well so I hope this happens!

It would certainly be interesting to hear if this is possible. I have one myself, in addition to the HDHR Connect.

You’ve got to be kidding me. I just dropped $126 to “upgrade” two HDHR3-US to HDHR4-2US and they were made aware of the explicit reason why I wanted to upgrade. They’re literally still in the mail! So now instead of getting some new goodies to get me going with DVR on my birthday, I’ll instead be reminded that I was had? Hmmmm.

Who is “they”? If you mean Plex, then they have relatively little control over how Silicondust change their firmware.

This following appears to be the relevant announcement from SiliconDust, and it doesn’t look like the firmware update was sufficient to give support to their own HDHomeRun DVR internal product, and so I suspect it will not work for Plex DVR either.

Using older HDHomeRun tuner products with new HDHomeRun apps

Using an older HDHomeRun unit requires HDHomeRun Setup on a Windows PC.
Once configured it will work with the latest HDHomeRun apps for Windows 10, XBox One, Mac, and Android TV.

Older products: HDHR-US, HDHR-EU, HDHR-T1-US, HDHR3-US, HDHR3-DT, and HDHR3-EU.

Instructions:

  1. Download and install the latest Windows software:
    viewtopic.php?f=119&t=20613

  2. Run a channel scan in HDHomeRun Setup. This is required even if it has been run previously and the channels shown in HDHomeRun Setup are correct.

  3. Install and launch the latest HDHomeRun app for Windows, XBox One, or Mac - it should detect the HDHomeRun tuner and show live TV.

Note that older HDHomeRun tuners cannot be used to make a recording with the HDHomeRun DVR software.

It is recommended that older products be used with the client connected via a wired Ethernet network.

I agree Karl. Don’t blame Plex. They are working hard enough as is. I was just trying to inform people about this possibility. If enough parties are interested I am sure Plex will find a way.

They was so obviously SiliconDust, you know the developer of the OT mentioned firmware and manufacturers of said HDHR3-US.

Seriously, hate to be snide, but, your reply is how rumors get started.

That having been rectified and responded to. The last word from SiliconDust that I read, was there is simply not enough RAM/memory in the “legacy” models to allow them to be supported on SiliconDust’s DVR “thingy” (whatever it’s called over there), so I suspect and have come to accept that the HDHR3-US device -wont- work with Plex’s.

Considering this update to the firmware fixes that problem, i don’t see why it is no longer possible. They could have changed a number of things to allow this to happen (better memory utilization or less compressing streams ect.) Either way I am sure all these questions will be answered once Plex figures out what is going on with this new release.

I’m all for this (well sorta given the circumstances), as I then be able to have not just four tuners, but, 8. That’s a DVR’ing fools dream. Add in a very hopeful prospect that at -some- point PMS -may- inherently have the capability of Live TV -streaming- to any/all supported clients, well, good times to be had by all. As they say, time will tell and I’ll remain optimistic.

It was a legitimate question. It is very easy to think that something is “obvious” when one writes it, but ambiguous pronouns such as “they” are open to interpretation, especially in a context like this (a Plex DVR forum, discussing SiliconDust products). I saw both possibilities and responded both from the perspective of you meaning Plex (the ‘relatively little control’) comment, and you meaning SiliconDust (the quote showing that the firmware change was insufficient to allow the product to work even with their own DVR system), which means that I did not bias my response in either direction. I fail to see how an even-handed response like that could start rumors. If anything, the factual quote I posted might prevent the spread of rumors that this firmware update might make the HRHR3-US usable under Plex DVR. But as lambro690 said, we’ll have to wait and see what the reality is.

If anyone comes across this, the feature has been added and it works amazing (as expected). Thanks Plex!

I agree that when they updated this it worked for me as well. Now when I just looked though, I have a message in DVR settings on the server that the DUAL was not found. I rebooted it but it didn’t change anything…hmmm…

Delete it and readd it. Won’t affect recordings and should bring it back.

That’s what I did actually. It’s rebuilding the guide data now. Thanks!

The channel scan went fine, but it did choke on loading the guide a couple times. Seems to be OK this minute though…
