Add cast information to personal videos

Player Version#:

I’ve recently set up a Plex server to make my personal videos and photos available for me to stream from an old pc I use as a nas. I’m wondering if there is a way to add/edit cast information so that I can search by who is in the videos.

You can include cast information as embedded metadata for your files. If you setup Plex to prefer that embedded metadata it should also assign the cast accordingly. I’ve got my family to show up on my sisters wedding video that way

How do I do this? When I went to edit them I could change titles, dates, etc but there was no field for cast.

Plex isn’t editing the embedded metadata. You’ll need a separate app for that.
Depending on the file type and OS there’s a bunch of options – you could e.g. use mp3tag on Windows to tag mp4/m4v video files (despite the app name  )

I was using mp3tag before, however it takes a long time to write changes, and most of that data doesn’t seem to be read by plex. and I have to go back in and edit that stuff from the web app. was hoping there was some way to edit just plex’s own metadata

Not unless you want to get your hands (very) dirty by tinkering with the Plex database (certainly not recommended as that can result in killing your server).
