I love the collection feature of Plex, it helps me to separate movies in franchises like Dark Knight, Aliens, Halloween, Terminator, or movies with different continuities, like how Halloween has different continuities like the Thorn Canon, H20 Canon, Zombie Canon, and Blumhouse Canon. Anywho, there are also shows that are connected to movies and vice versa, like Firefly and Serenity or Terminator 1&2 and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, or Evil Dead 1&2/Army of Darkness and Ash vs. Evil Dead. I would like to put those together in collections, but you can’t seem to combine movies and TV shows since they’re different medias and they are in different folders. It’s a tall order, I know, but you can add items from different folders and media into playlists, like you could put Firefly and Serenity in a playlist, but not a collection. I’m autistic, and I’m a stickler to put them together since they’re in the same continuity, I just like seeing them together in a collection, like individual timelines. I’m sure no one would care about this, I just think if you can put them in a playlist, you should be able to put them in a collection too.
If you give the TV show and movie collections the same collection name. Like Star Wars then they will both show up on the the collection page. If you are looking at the Star Wars movie collection then the there will be a related hub at the bottom with “TV Shows in the Star Wars collection” for example. I know there is a bug with the Apple TV app where it does not show the the related that hopefully will be fixed soon but I don’t have an ETA.
Just to give some context
This way you can also link Pixar movies and Pixar shorts in a separate library or soundtrack albums…
I’m trying it now with Firefly and Serenity. Thank you both.
To keep you updated it. It worked like you guys said and it’s pretty good, I kinda wish they were organized better, where they are side-by-side, but we can’t have everything, at least they’re in a collection like I want divided by continuity. Thank you for suggesting it, I feel bad taking up space on the forum, but this isn’t really something you can google. What would you type in to find this answer? Thanks again.
Searching for “Plex Collection” in google, our support doc I linked above is the first result for me
Jumping onto this thread since I was looking into an issue related to this.
I’ve followed the steps outlined in the doc linked above, but I am still not seeing related items from collections with the same name. I’ve got a collection called “Marvel” for MCU movies, and another collection with the same name for TV shows, but when I click into either of them from their respective libraries, all I see are the items that sit in each respective library.
Any thoughts on what I could be doing wrong?
Edit: adding some additional information.
I’ve checked Plex on iOS devices, Firestick, Mac OS, and through web browser, all with the same result. I also have both collections set up as Smart collections using the same criteria. I’ve confirmed that they both have the same name, sort name, posters, etc.
This is a screen shot from the Android TV app when in my movie library and have my Marvel collection open and scroll to the bottom. (should be the same on FireTV which is the same app)
it will also display in the related rows on a movies detail page. So if you are Iron Man it should have a row for other Movies in the Marvel Collection then another row with TV shows in Marvel Collection
I’ve honestly never tried with a smart collection though
Smart collections are a bit tricky when it comes to related content… from what I’ve understood, they’re supposed to work slightly different, though I’m not sure if the different behavior on related media is intended.
IIRC, regular collections will show same-named smart collections as related, but not the other way around. That’s one of the reasons why I transferred my Marvel collection back to a regular one.
Well, I’m making good use out of it connecting my movies with the TV shows that spawned from them or vice versa. I just wish that they were side-by-sde in chronological order instead of divided in movie or TV subgroups, but it’s no big deal since the shows and movies I have don’t have something after it, like there wasn’t another show or movie after Serenity, so in order it’s the Firefly show and Serenity, and there’s probably not gonna be an Evil Dead 4 after Ash vs. Evil Dead since Bruce Campbell retired from Ash, so in order it’s Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, and Ash vs. Evil Dead. Basically, I would only nitpick if they made an Evil Dead 4 set after Ash vs. Evil Dead because I can’t put them like Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, Ash vs. Evil Dead, and Evil Dead 4, it would be Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, Evil Dead 4, and Ash vs. Evil Dead because of the movie/TV subgroups.
