Add NAS as Seconday Server

Server Version#: 1.20.2.3402

I have a ReadyNAS 2304 that my server runs backups to. I’d like to run a second instance of Plex on the NAS in case my server goes belly-up. I installed Plex on the NAS, but when I launch the web UI I don’t see any option to add the NAS as a second server. Any ideas?

Do you have a “open”, “configure”, or similar button accessible within the ReadyNAS interface/webpages? I did what you’re doing, but on Synology and WD and it seems I had to launch the webUI from within the NAS UI to first get the login prompt for the new server. Once logged in you should then see both servers in the Plex webUI.

the important part of hatfieldjf’s response is:
You need to connect to the local/bundled version of the Plex user interface on that NAS. If you connect through the hosted web app (http://app.plex.tv/desktop), Plex has no means to know the fresh install is supposed to be linked to your account.

Sorry for the late response, got caught up in family stuffs. Anyway, interesting development: First off, I have been using the Launch button from my NAS’s apps page. However, when I launched it today and signed in I got the dreaded “No soup for you!” screen. So… help?

When you click the launch button… which address is being opened?
As pointed out above, you should use http://[NAS IP address]:32400/web/index.html – not http://app.plex.tv/desktop. So if launching the app through the NAS is forwarding you to the hosted version of Plex Web… try entering address using the actual IP of the NAS.

Yes, it’s my NAS’s IP address port 32400.

Can you access the server logs from your Netgear NAS?
Considering it appears you cannot access the server itself, you’ll need to get the files from the NAS itself (or do you get to see the troubleshooting section in the server settings?)

I’m uploading the log files I just took from my NAS. I modified a couple only to take out personal data like email addresses, etc.

Mod-Edit: removed those logs… they might contain more confidential stuff than some e-mail addresses

Not the logs I was looking for – those are your system logs; not those of the Plex Media Server.
However they show that the Plex Media Server was going to an “unexpected state” (failed).

Unfortunately those are the only logs I have access to; going into Plex settings (launched from the NAS) only shows my primary Unraid server. See attached screen shot.plex

You can find the logs in the ReadyNAS‘ file system (see the 2nd part of the support article above):

/apps/plexmediaserver/MediaLibrary/Plex Media Server/Logs/

See, you’re already teaching me new stuff  Here are the actual log filesPlex Media Server.zip (118.4 KB)

Looks like there’s some network hiccup where your new PMS doesn’t recognize the requests to it as local. It’s trying to resolve some of that by attempting to connect to plex.tv but fails – I suppose the latter is because you’re already running a 2nd server within that same network using UPnP (automatic port forwarding).

Can you attempt the following steps?

  1. stop your original PMS
  2. uninstall and re-install PMS on your ReadyNAS
  3. start PMS on your ReadyNAS and open it via its local IP address

Does that bring you somewhere?
If it does… make sure to configure 2 independent manual port forwards on your router – one for each PMS and update the remote access configuration of your servers accordingly.

-Stopped Plex on my main server
-Uninstalled Plex on my NAS
-Reinstalled Plex (downloaded from plex.tv) on my NAS
-Launched Plex from NAS
-Redirected to plex.tv for sign in, redirected back to 192.168.1.5:32400 after signing in
-No soup for you!

Grrrr.

try this

assuming no issues, then you should see both servers @ Plex Web (you might have to click ‘more’ to see the other server, and then ‘pin’ the libraries you want to see by default)

Still no soup. I really appreciate you all trying to help, but this is becoming more of a pain than it’s worth to me. I think I’m just going to turn on DLNA on my NAS if I ever need it. Thanks again you guys (or gals.)
