Add shared folder on 2nd Synology 918+

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

I have PMS running successfully on my DS918+ holding my films/TV.
After adding a second DS918+ for other media and security cameras, I moved my music to this NAS to free space on the first.
How do I now add the music folder on the new NAS to PMS on the original. I don’t see the second NAS when I browse for the folder in library set up.
Both Synology are running the current release of DSM7 release 3.
PMS is 1.29.2.6364-7000

I have been scratching my head on this for days. Any help to fix would be great.

It’s two different devices, so… As far as I’m aware, you can’t add folders from 1 NAS to another NAS’ Plex setup. You have to install the plex service on there and have a separate device in the list.

@Hollymoon

You can connect one Syno holding data to another Syno holding data and where PMS lives.

To explain how this works, let’s name these:

  1. Primary (where PMS lives)
  2. Secondary (where only data lives)

Where we stand:

  1. Primary PMS is fully configured and running
  2. Want to add the data from Seconday to PMS on Primary

How we do it: Please adapt the folders to suit your need

On both machines:

On Secondary:

  1. Select the shared folder you want to use on the Primary NAS
    – FIleStation → Left Panel
    – Right-Click the folder you want to use on Primary
    – Properties → Permissions tab

  2. Add permission for “Everybody” to “Read only” (allows all files over the network)
    – “Apply to this folder sub-folders and files” (important)

On Primary:

  1. Create a shared folder for the other syno: (Good practice but NOT required)

  2. Optionally create a sub-folder to mount to if a conflict arises. (DSM creates sub-folders for you based on remote shared folder name)

  3. Open FileStation
    – Tools → Mount Remote Folder → NFS

  4. FIll out the mount spec

  5. Check “Mount Automatically on startup”

  6. Mount

Many thanks for this, very helpful. Followed it but when I try and mount the remote nfs folder,I get an error saying that nfs is not enabled.

Did you enable NFS on both machines as described in Chuck’s post (“On both machines”)?

Tom, thanks for the reply, yes I believe I did, been through then process step by step more than once. I am wondering if there are other settings which may cause a problem

I forgot one step. I am sorry. :frowning:

On the synology which is exporting (Secondary) create the NFS rule:

Here is how it looks exporting the “Animated” shared folder on ‘/volume1’

Export to IP: * (Any host on my LAN)
Permission: Read/Write or ‘Read Only’
Squash: “no mapping”
Security: “sys”

Check the 3 boxes to allow access to subfolders.

Now the mount will succeed
