I have a lifetime sub to Plex Pass and I added a friend to my server. When he uses the Windows “App” after about am inute of playing video he gets this message.
“Booted up a a show and got this message.
Fling media to app or use it to control other pled apps (no time limits)
Until activated, playback from a Plex Media Server to this app will be limited to a minute.
Activate this full app in one of two ways: sign in with a Plex Pass enabled account (the app access is a subscription benefit) or purchase the one time in app activation.
Options are not now, sign in, activate for 4.99”
If he uses a web browser and watches that way it’s fine. Which forces my server to do some extra transcoding. My entire library is basically x265, so it means it’s constantly transcoding because of this. Any idea why it’s saying this only in the app for him?
All the ‘mobile’ Plex apps (Android, iOS, Windows UWP) are not free.
They cost a one time payment to unlock (~ $5 or 5€).
Plex Pass holders get them for free though.
Tell him to install Plex Media Player, which is free.
Ah, I never thought to ask him if he got his from the MS Store or from The Plex Website. That does seem to the problem. What’s the difference between them and why does one charge?
Also is it possible for my friend to use the browser on his Android to watch rather than paying $5 for that to be capable?

The one from the app store also runs on Windows-powered phones and tablets and is optimized for touch screen use. It also supports mobile sync, which might be one of the main reasons to use it.
PMP on the other hand requires a PC (or Mac) and doesn’t support Mobile Sync.
But it does support audio bitstreaming and plays virtually any codec directly.
Recommended for use with HTPCs on Home Cinema setups.
