Add Watch Together to New Plex Experience

Interesting, this needs more clarification. As long as we’re able to still use Watch Together on its current app, then I dont mind it not being used on just another separate app. But from what they said, it will only be available on the Web App, they never mentioned the TV or Mobile or PC apps will still retain it.

Watch Together is one of the main reasons I started using Plex in the first place. It’s incredibly frustrating to see that it’s being discontinued.

Watch together is the only way I can watch things with my family. Please, don’t remove it from apps. Or, at least add it to the development roadmap. Hell, you could even make it a benefit of Plex Pass. There’s no feasible, end user friendly alternative out there.

Awful decision, if I could take back my Plex pass I would. Don’t roll it back, truly insane that they would try to remove a core feature like this. What are you thinking?

I can’t believe how horrible that post, hey we know many of you like this feature, please support our decision to not care about you.

yeah but… After that happens, you just can’t make any more non-tech-savvy friends who don’t know how to sideload the old app

This is a mistake. Uncertain times for people aren’t only based around the pandemic - families and significant others are long distance, people travel, etc. This feature, atleast for paid Plex Pass users, is essential. Removing it is devaluing your own product, as seen by the amount of votes in favor and comments against the change.

Yeah this is a major feature of Plex for me. I use this all the time to watch stuff with my friends and family. 100% switching to Jellyfin if they remove this.

I use watch together to connect with friends across the globe. Please rethink getting rid of this feature.

This is a rare post for me. I usually think online commenting should be approached with tact and polite discourse. But, in this rare case, I’m just going to come out and say that the idea of shipping your new Plex Experience while removing one of the core experiences of the platform is absurd.

I get that you’re PE funded with profit motives and incentives like any business that has external forces lobbying for their own interests over those of your loyal user base; especially the passionate ones who (while in the minority) drive most of the feedback that contributes to development and improvement of the platform.

I have turned more people on to Plex because of this feature than all of the rest combined. We live in a disconnected world. Ironically, more-so than 5 years ago when Covid forced us all to be home watching movies as a family together (as you cited in your email). Family, friends, parents, siblings are all scattered everywhere and this feature gave us all a chance to connect in ways that felt special and unique to your platform. I use Plex as a server for all of our Home Movies and videos from the old 8mm reels your parents used to shoot. They reside in a digital library now that we’ll play for the family and my aging parents during holidays or birthdays when the 8 hour distance between all of us is too far or expensive to travel for each time.

Long distance relationships that thrive off of creative ways like this to maintain an intimacy and connection with one another. I’ll watch a movie together with friends using PiP while we chat together on the iOS messages app. It’s a phenomenal feature.

While the new architecture you refer to, l’m sure, requires a rewrite of the code to make this feature workable again, and business is all about prioritization of resources, I would strongly urge and plead for more of a user focused decision making approach to this and the development roadmap going forward. Send out a poll, get feedback, engage with the people that use Plex still even though their $87 per month in subscription streaming services largely offers the same or more content than what they have on Plex.

Why do they still use it?

LEARN from them.

And if a hackathon was able to produce a perfectly adequate feature that really improved the lives and experience of your users, then do it again. Only, this time, make the feature even more prominent and easy to find and use because it’s one of your best. I’ll happily supply the Pizza.

Love you guys, love the platform (and have since its earliest days) but damnit I don’t like you all very much right now.

Like many others, I find this to be the main selling feature of Plex above all other streaming platforms. As someone who is often away from friends and family, it’s a really nice way to spend time with them regardless of where I, or they, are. Without the watch together feature, what really sets Plex aside from any other platform? We have enough Tubis and Jellyfins.

Ask for a refund and state the specific reason why, that should let them know that they’re going to lose money for removing this feature.

Extremely disappointed to hear about watch together going away. Wish I never bought lifetime Plex pas now. I wonder if there is any way to prevent server and clients from updating to keep this feature available for my friends and I…

I have used this feature going on 5 years now, and it is the ONLY reason I use plex and bought the plex pass to support such a great feature. Reconsider this please, otherwise you’ve lost a long term user.

The main to reasons I bought Plex pass was for Hardware Transcoding, and Watch together with family members. Watch together is partly also why I built a new Plex Server over the Synology one I began with.

Lifetime pass and ‘Watch together’ is used multiple times a week.
The loss of this feature really damages my use of Plex.

I wonder how many alt accounts have been created so folks could vote for this multiple times… :upside_down_face:

That reminds me, I have a second account. I get a whole second set of votes now.
Of course, I paid for a Plex Pass for the other account as well, so I don’t consider that cheating.

It’s literally the most important feature to me with Plex. I’m going to test out Jellyfin. If it works, bye bye Plex Pass. What a horrible decision!

@elan

Watch Together is essential to me and my user base, and clearly to the MAJORITY of the Plex community.

Plex really needs to KEEP the Watch Together feature and ensure that it is available in whatever new beta or apps that NOBODY had requested for…

WE NEED WATCH TOGETHER, PLEX!!!

It’s utterly disappointing how the Plex management egregiously ignores the legitimate concerns and desires of the true Plex community, including many of us loyal fans who are on Plex Pass!

Plex needs to stop being a smart Alec by “innovating” new features and that we clearly don’t need and drowning us with many unimpressive side features with poor utility and uptake!

I implore Plex to stay true to their initial core values of developing the PMS in the first place.

Please Plex, please make sure to keep Watch Together and prioritise its implementation in any future versions of your apps/products.

This is a very sad time for the Plex community. Time to mourn…
