Adding a movie to a "Collection" removes the "Related Movies" content

EDIT: Bumping this for visibility, because of the new collections feature…
I’ll add some new suggestions, and reasons for those suggestions in a new post in this thread

Just finished adding the first 4 “Saw” movies to my library. I have the “Use collection info from The Movie Database” disabled in the Plex Movie agent and The Movie Database, because it simply makes too many collections. The default agent is for the library is Plex Movie.

The movies scanned properly, downloaded all of the info correctly, and each of the four movies showed several related movies. Didn’t pay attention, I assume mostly horror movies. I edited the collections tag in each movie separately, not a multiple edit, and added the tag, “Saw” into the collection category.

Now, none of the movies has a “related movies” section, and display only the collection itself. One movie did keep the “more with related actor” info, I don’t actually know if all of them had that type of information.

Is this by design, or is it a “bug?”

Thanks, @trumpy81 – yeah, already thought of both of those suggestions/work-arounds, but the truth is, I want it all! >:)

I can’t imagine the logic for that decision (if it was deliberate). For example, I might want to make the Disney animated series of “The Jungle Book” into a collection, but right now I see a bunch of other Disney movies and other animated family orientated films in the “Related Movies” discovery hub. Since the hubs are supposed to be all about discovery, Plex has completely eliminated a lot of movies that I, or more likely, one of the users of my server, might want to watch.

Maybe you can poke the right people to re-consider the decision…

Personally, I would like to see the Related Movies hub remain and subtract anything in a Collection from it, while still displaying the Collection hub.

Exactly. If memory serves me, both used to be visible. And you are 100% correct, the related movies often, if not always, echoed the collection, but did display other choices. Not a big deal, but maybe one day.

My original post was several months ago, and as we all now, the Collections feature was almost unusable at that time. But now we have a good start, but here’s some problems I have run into. Explaining the inconsistent manner that Plex uses for the hubs in related content is harder than I expected it to be, but feel free to clear up my poor wording.

Plex won’t show items you have placed in multiple collections. For example, you have created a “Wolverine” collection, an “X-Men” collection, and a “Marvel” collection. The movie “Logan” has been tagged to fit into all of those collections. It appears that Plex only shows the items from ONE of those collections in the hubs, and since the related movie info is no longer displayed, you seem to get (perhaps randomly) only items from one of the collections.

SUGGESTION: If you came to the item from within a specific collection, always show the movies from that collection. That is, if I found Logan from the “X-Men” collection, show the other items in the X-Men collection, not one of the other collections the movie is in.

SUGGESTION: include other collections the movie is included in (or at least the poster for the other collections). Or perhaps a new hub, “Logan is also included in these collections…” or “Related Collections” or something similar.

SUGGESTION: @trumpy81 had a good idea. I’m sure it’s easier said than done, but keep the Related Movies hub and subtract anything in a Collection from it, while still displaying the Collection hub. I really miss the “Related Movies” section where I might get a listing for other films in that genre, etc.

Yeah, this is by design, intended to reduce duplication of content between the different “hubs” (a lot of times the related movies ended up almost mirroring the collection contents, so it was pretty redundant).

I can agree the related movies hub can be redundant and I can reluctantly accept that that extra info will be missing.

However, the fact is, that right now Plex seems a little inconsistent and random in how it selects which “Collection” hub to display when you have an item in multiple collections. Adding the other collections (even if it’s just a link to those collections, not the actual items in the collection) would make the whole discovery process close to perfect.

I’ll pass along that suggestion, which is quite a nice one
