Adding a secondary Plex Server on local network

Having trouble adding a second (backup) server, both on Windows 10 Pro. Both have separate names. I have PlexPass.

The trouble is that one server over takes the other and won’t list separately.

I used a backup of the original server (local app data and reg file) to create the backup server if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance.

make sure they don’t have the same machine identifier.

I’ll check. If this is the case, how do I find the new computer’s machine identifier?

Thank you!

it is in the registry settings. Delete the value for the one that is there and when the server starts up it will create a new one for itself.

technically there are two
MachineIdentifier
AnonymousMachineIdentifier

probably delete the value for CertificateUUID just to make sure it gets a new cert for itself

Though I would just delete all the reg settings and just claim it again as a new server

I tried this, everything repopulated except MachineIdentifier. Still seems to have the same problem. Is there another way to force populate the MachineIdentifier?

I would just shut down the server. delete all the registry settings, start it up and claim it as a new server. It will show the initial set up wizard but besides giving it a name you can skip the steps in the wizard

OK - I deleted the entire registry. restarted the computer, set it back up with the new registry and still the same issue. I have not been prompted to “claim” it.

Is machine 1, the original up and running?

Yes. However when I log into it while server 2 is running, server 1’s name changes to server 2’s name on the web gui. Server 1’s name is not found on the server list. When server 2 is active, it takes over everything.

ok can you

1 stop both servers from running.
2 server 1 original start up the server and let it run as it should be
3, server 2 clone. delete the registry settings value for ProcessedMachineIdentifier (i forgot this one before)
4. restart the computer server 2 is on
5. start up server 2

Ok - I think I fixed it. Thank you. I ended up wiping the drive and starting over, but it seems to work now.
Thanks again.

I haven’t tried this with Plex but wouldn’t it be easier to enable first alive load balancer in the firewall or a load balancing server/virtual server before the Plex Media Server.
Then all connections will be done to server one and when it stopped responding or the heartbeat fails server number two will take over.

I’ve never used a virtual server, but the intention was to have a back up server in the event I could not access the primary server, due to maintenance or other issues, especially when I’m out of town.
