Adding a TV Show in a single folder, then episodes (TV Show>Show>) will not scan metadata

Hi all,

I have scanned a folder like this: Media>TV Show>The Mockumentary (US)

Inside “The Mockumentary” I have Season 1, 2 etc…

When I scan like this it finds everything, but will not add metadata.

The Only way for it to find metadata is scanning: Media>TV Show>The Mockumentary>Season 1

This way it finds metadata but I will need to have like 9 different folders for a single show. Is this how Plex works?

I wanted to have one folder of the show on the left side, and all the seasons listed.

It’s really hard to explain what I mean.

There is no such show at TVDB or TMDB.

You need to get ‘the real’ name for the show, or:

Fix Match
Search Options
Agent Dropdown
Select Personal Media
Search
Select the ONLY item in the list - yours.

Now you ‘Hand Edit’ - with no online information to gather - it’s your only option.

As for misbehavior in a TV Show Library…

Show us your file names - or meticulously adhere to these instructions for if you don’t - it won’t work:

I put a “fake name” for the show for copyright reasons.

The show is real and it scans fine, sorry about that. The problem is not the name of the show, disregard that.

Without a show name I can’t test it - and you’ll receive no further help from me.
Plex doesn’t care where you got this show, what it is, or what it’s about. Neither do I.

Show us your file names and structures:

Hi, sorry about that then. I simply took precautions because of copyright reasons. I appreciate your help.

I will try and be clearer to explain what I mean.

I named my structure like this:

I then added the show pointing to the top most folder, where the seasons are contained:

This way it finds everything, but scans no metadata. In order to get all metadata I need to add each season separately, like this:

It’s ok, I guess, but imagine having a library of over 2TB of data, organized into “Media>Show>Season1,2,3”

The shows would look like a massive list on the left side and to find what you want to play it would take an hour.

I am new to this particular media server, and the backend is amazing (encoding and streaming is absolutely top notch), but in terms of UI it’s really awful.

I am trying Kodi and Bingie at the moment, I don’t know if that will get the results I want.

You don’t ‘aim’ Plex at ANY Show.

You ‘aim’ the TV Show Library at the TV Show Library Folder - and that’s it.

So, by looking now, we can see you aim Plex at ‘TV Shows’ - nowhere else.
As you add Shows - Plex finds them - 'cause they’re all nice and neat with all the right bits - as we can see.

You desperately need to do this, however:

Before you change your Folder Paths - back down to one.

Holy crap! You have just opened my damn mind!

So I just clicked the + sign, pointed the database just at “TV shows”…BOOM!

I did not understand how that worked! I now love you and you are my favourite person!

I assumed, like some manual database, I would need to add each and everything separately. This is now absolutely amazing.

Edit: It’s doing it, man, IT’S DOING IT!

You don’t know me that well.
I’m a real stinker - at times…lol

I’m pleased you saw some light.

Now you can have as many TV Show Library Folders as you want:

Scattered hither and yon all over 5HDDs, but not one Show… (I found that out the same way you did - a decade ago - and it was @Elijah_Baley that told me about it…lol )

That would see to be the problem. You do not add the show folder but rather you add the folder where the shows are contained:
. . . . . . . .
TV Shows ← The TV library points here
_______ShowName (year)
____________Season 01
__________________ShowName (year) - s01e01 - Optional Name.ext
__________________ShowName (year) - s01e02 - Optional Name.ext
__________________and so on for the shows in season 01
____________Season 02 ← just like Season 01
____________Season 03 ← and so on for each season
____________Season 00 ← or “Specials”
__________________ShowName (year) - s00e01 - Optional name
__________________ShowName (year) - s00e02 - Optional name
__________________and so on for each special

Note 1: the eXX part of the specials must match EXACTLY what is found in TheTVDB

Note 2: The (year) may be omitted for shows that do not have more than one occurrence throughout the years.

There are other structures and naming systems that work but this is the one I use and it just works.
