There has been lots of discussion around Library management and maybe I’m doing something wrong but…
What is the proper process for adding new music to an existing library?
I have ripped a new CD to a local machine and added the appropriate Meta Data to the files using dBpoweramp. Once that was done I just created a new folder with the Album name in the Artist folder in the Shared folder where the music library lives. then moved the files over to that folder. Now, I always understood that Plex had Scheduled Tasks under settings. The actions should run between 02h00-09h00 (for my schedule). So I expected that between those time the library should be rescanned and what ever else is selected to run for that schedule.
Also under Settings-Library there is ‘Scan my library automatically’ and ‘Scan my library periodically’ they are both selected.
The new CD doesn’t appear in the Plex library?
Is there a way to put new music in a particular folder and then Plex keeps an eye on that folder. when it sees new files then it should absorb those into the main library. iTunes used to do this which was very useful. I would imagine that the same process would work for Movies and TV Shows as well.
There are a couple of things that might be preventing Plex from cataloging these new albums. When linux is involved, the first thing I suggest is to check the permissions on the files.
If the permissions are correct, the next thing is the organization and naming of your files, especially if your library does not have the “Prefer local metadata” option enabled.
If all that is correct, then the automated scan should pick the album up. You can also manually initiate the scan in Plex Web by selecting “Scan Library Files” from the library’s action menu:
Thanks @beckfield . The permissions were right as is the organisation and naming convention of the files I put manually into the Library location on my NAS box.
So, if you were going to rip a couple of CD’s how would you copy the music to your existing library? To have to manually copy files over the the library and put them in exactly the right place seems a huge faff? Maybe that’s just me.
Ok, well for quite some time I was using iTunes. To add files to the library I would just rip the files to a directory in the library called ‘Automatically Add to iTunes’. iTunes keeps an eye on this folder and will absorb any suitable file that is put into that folder. So it was easy to just add ripped CD’s as the library would automatically move the files the the appropriate folder, assuming that the files had tags updated.
So, right now I have to do this manually eg copy a folder of the ripped album (The Wall) and put it in the Pink Floyd folder in the Library.
The files are flac so they are supported, I can do a manual Scan Library Files but the new album/music never appears.
Ok, I see. I’ve never used iTunes. I didn’t know it would actually move files that way. So yeah, you have to put them in the right place, whether you rip them straight there, or move them after ripping.
Whatever is causing Plex to not find them once they’re in the right place is what we have to figure out. At this point, we probably need to look at log files to see why Plex isn’t finding them. I’m not particularly strong at looking through logs, but we can have a go if you want.
