Additional Optimize Version storage locations

I would like to use the Optimize function for my Movie library, when trying to set this up I can see there is only one location available, that being the original file location, is it possible to specifical other locations? I(m almost certain I) remember this being an option on other PMS’s I have setup.

You have to add the storage location to the library.

  • Add the location to the desired library.
  • Re-scan the library if Plex does not do so automatically.
  • The user Plex (DSM 6) or PlexMediaServer (DSM 7) must have read/write permission to the location where optimized files will be stored.

Example:
DS414, DSM 7.0.1-42218, PMS 1.25.2.5319
Note: Do not use /plex for media if running DSM 6.

I have added the second location to the same library (volume2) as the screenshot below shows:

But I still can only see the original movie location as the output location.

Check file/folder permissions for /volume2/Scratch/Plex Cache.

FAQ 19: Setting permissions to allow Plex access to media files

I have reviewed the settings and the permissions do look correct.

Please see the setup below:

Do you use DSM 7?
In that case you need to give permission to the Internal User PlexMediaServer, not Plex (it’s not used anymore)

Nope, I’m still using DSM 6.2

A couple of things to try:

  1. Set the permissions for /volume2/Scratch even though they look OK.

In File Station pull up the properties for Scratch, not Plex Cache. Go to the Permission tab. Make sure user plex has r/w permissions. Check the box for “Apply to this folder…” and click OK. This will force DSM to set the permissions. Rescan the library. See if you can select the folder.

  2. Move a movie into /volume2/Scratch/Plex Cache and see if PMS can find it when you scan the library (ex: /volume2/Scratch/Plex Cache/Avatar (2009)/Avatar (2009).mkv). This tests read, not write, but it makes sure Plex can at least see the folder.
