I thought if you subscribe to Plex Pass (in my case over 2 years @ 4.99 a month), if you ended the Plex Pass portion, you would NOT need to pay the 4.99 “activation fee” for a mobile app again?
In other words, the Plex Pass gave you all the “add on / premium” features - but if you no longer need those features and cancel the Pass portion you would still have PERMANENTLY activated the app to eliminate the 1 minute playback limit.
I’ve tried to reactivate my purchase, but since I’m logged in with my Plex ID, it says I don’t have a subscription and won’t let me play anything for more than 1 minute. Seems a bit greedy to ask for another 4.99 after paying for over 2 years when I no longer need the Plex Pass features.
It works exactly as I would have expected it. Can you watch Netflix after your subscription has ended? Probably not. It is a subscription and ends when you stop paying for it.
TeknoJunky - I agree that Plex Pass and the apps are two different things. Yes, Plex sells an app activation to use the apps without having to buy a Plex Pass subscription for premium functions. And yes, they sell a Plex Pass for access to the cool stuff. IF you buy the apps, then PlexPass later, you shell out the activation cash and ultimately pay for the subscription. But when you first pay for Plex Pass (and setup the apps at the same time as I did), you don’t pay for activation AND a month of Plex Pass in the first month - part of the benefit was that the first month fee is basically the same as the app activation, so it was worth a run with Plex Pass - which I did stay with for over 2 years. I didn’t expect to have to re-buy the app just because I don’t need the rest of the Plex Pass features. Hopefully Plex could be more clear about the process. I’m disappointed for sure.
Coxeroni - I do understand the Netflix example and do not expect to get something for nothing. Of course I expected to lose the Plex Pass features such as offline sync, DVR, etc. But to have to pay for the apps again (after 2 years of paying $5 a month) is a bit unjustified and greedy in my opinion.
So to be clear are you saying you paid for the mobile app activation from the same store (iOS or Android) and then at a later date purchased a PlexPass which is now cancelled.
If so, I agree that sucks and doesn’t alter the fact you bought the app already. Again assuming to diidn’t since make the switch from Android to iOS (or Vice-Versa)
If you have never purchased the app it makes total sense.
the mobile app activation is ONLY to unlock the mobile app (1 minute limit), and it only works for the app store you purchase from (ie ios or android, not both, unless you buy from both stores).
If you think you really did buy the UNLOCK (not the plex pass), it should be in your app store history, just login to your google or apple account and search for it.
If you do find the app unlock (not plex pass), then you should be able to ‘reactivate’ the app unlock.
If for some reason you change emails and purchased it on a different email/app store account, you might have to contact that app store support to see if you can get your purchases transferred (no idea if they do this).
In any case, the app unlock has nothing to do plex pass.
Plex pass simply lets users not have to play the unlock fee, for as long as the plex pass is active.
The ability to activate the mobiles apps is a feature of a Plex Pass subscription. Just like all other Plex Pass features, they end when your subscription ends.
TeknoJunky - I agree with your explanation - sorry my post was confusing, what you said is what I meant. The app activation is so you can stream from your own server to your own iOS app. I was trying (not very well) to say that the Plex Pass subscription gets you that one feature (app activation) AND many more features (the many more is what I don’t need now) when the subscription is active. I’ve used the same iOS platform and email so I don’t have the issue with the cross-store support (for what it is worth, I would expect to have to pay again for a different platform app).
All - I did not purchase the app unlock - in fact, I originally installed Plex on my iOS device in Jan 2016 (back when Plex Pass for early access to new features, etc). I started using Plex more earnestly at the end of 2017, hence the subscription to Plex Pass (DVR functionality in particular was amazing when I was using it during a temporary living situation for a couple years).
And yes, I did expect that having paid for Plex Pass for a couple years would have essentially given me a permanent unlock of the app for my personal streaming (removal of the 1 minute limit). I did NOT expect the EXTRA Plex Pass items like the DVR, offline viewing, etc. to continue. Seems to me a reasonable expectation, but I understand the business model and am more clear on the solution (aka - buy the app activation for iOS if you want to use iOS without a Plex Pass).
Thanks for everyone’s help. I appreciate it (and have always liked this aspect of the Plex solution - an active user base). Thanks!
